Bullet lube question
« on: November 12, 2010, 12:37:04 PM »
I am admittedly green as grass when it comes to BP cartridge loading and shooting but I have shot muzzle loading rifles for years and have some experience with powder fouling.
Years ago i began to use a patch lube from a company called Young Country and the product was Lube 103.
Their claim was that you could get 713 shots from a patched round ball and 1109 continous shots with conical bullets with no wiping.
I know that on my .50 cal Great plains rifle I have fired 50 rounds of patched round balls with absoluty no problem. The ball and patch almost fall down the barrel with little effort. and there is no problen cleaning after as there is almost no deposit in the barrel.
So as I began to get into hand loading these cartridges I wondered if the Lube 103 would work in the Sharps since foiuling seems to be such a big issue.
And I wondered if anyone had used it for these big bore rifles with any success.

Anything thats soft enough to aborb into a patch isn't going to work worth spit on a bullet.
Go http://bullshop.gunloads.com/tbs_products.htm and get some of that Nasa lube.
I've been involved in a test of this stuff and so far it has really come shining thru. Have been able to go as many as 21 rounds in the 45-70 with out a loss in accuracy, and not using a blow tube or wiping. And the best part is there has been virtually no leading when doing these extended round torture test.
Second best bpcr lube available is http://www.sageoutfitters.com/catalog/item/7209324/7456325.htm

Although you can lube a patch with 103 by wioing  iyt into both sides it real has to be melted and the patches dipped to get into the patch. It wotks well on conical bullets in the grooves  but thats the companies claim,Ive only used it on round ball.

I've yet to use anything that worked good on patches or conicals that worked worth a hoot on bullets..
 But knock your socks off..
Pure gum spirits of turpentine soaked patches on a jag are good for mining the lead out of a barrel after serious lube failure..

A good starting point for home-lube is a 50/50 mix, by volume of beeswax and Oliveoil/Crisco/animal lube, etc.
Via trial & error, adjust the volumes to suit your fancy. You can either pan-lube or use a commercial lube/sizer. I use a Lyman 450 & size to .459 for my Sharps (which does little-no sizing, but is my preferred method of applying lube to all my BP bullets.

May I suggest that the "animal lube" be good ol' PIG FAT as in Bacon Grease.....{prevents the acquisition of "virgins" as well as other things in the after life}...... ;)....... then if it gets too thin thicken with more beeswax, paraffin or candle wax.  Probably a "period correct" formula.   :D :D :D    I externally lube up my cartridges to make up Snotty Nose lil' Buggers.   8)

PS, get my beeswax form toilet seal rings and also paraffin from the Farm & Home Lumber Supply.  Doc says I can't cook my cackle-berries in the pig fat any more but I'll be dying happy eat'n the pig bellies on the compromise... :D :D
