I've got naked sling swivels on my 1866 musket!!
« on: November 10, 2017, 10:06:28 AM »
My Uberti Winchester 1866 musket has finally arrived!! And believe it or not it came all the way from Italy via slow boat from China with naked sling swivels!  Something must be done to correct this travesty. How can it be a real reproduction musket without a sling? And a bayonet? Well, what is correcter, a leather or a cloth sling? My Krag has a repro cloth sling while my original 73 musket has an old leather sling. Confusing. I would appreciate any learned and esteemed imput from the Barracks members. BTW, I'm working on making a bayonet that fits. Thanks.

Don't post any naked pictures on this family oriented forum, but once you get some clothing on it....I'd like to see!

Well, I can't think of any official adoption of the m1866 Musket by anybody (the turks at Plevna used civilian carbines) so put whatever you like best on it.  (I will also say I think a lot were bought by private purchase by officers around the world. In my Vetterli book I've read that Italian Ascari officers in Africa like to carry Winchesters)  I'd think a simple leather sling would look best.  I like these: https://www.libertytreecollectors.com/productcart/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=116&idcategory=0     Simple, durable, and can be dyed darker brown or black as desired.
Civilize them with a Krag . . .

Again as Drydock said to the best of my knowledge only the Turks used the 1866 Winchester as an issued military weapon, so maybe find out what they were using at the time?
On the other hand, since the rifles were from America, The 1866 Springfield used the Civil War musket slings (as did the 1865, 1868 and 1870's) so you could probably use one of those as well. You might have to add an extra hole or two though?

Thanks guys for the info. Since there are no real US appropriate slings I'm going to get a Trapdoor leather sling with the fixed loop on one end and the adjustment furniture on the other. Pardon my ignorance but where does the fixed loop go? I'm thinking that it would be on the front swivel and the adjustment would hook on the inside of the sling or am I bass ackwards?

If you are using the 45/70 trapdoor sling as apposed to the CW Springfield sling Jerry linked to....

Nah.  Leather sling.  1866.  Not much after 1865 eh??  I think you just might do well with S&S Reproduction Henry Sling.  I previously mentioned, the mount on the Butt Stock looks a lot like the Sling mount on the Henry, just not inlet.  Henry front hook would loop thru the front mount on the 66.  Would look terrific me thinks.
