Title: .45 Colt RNFP molds
Post by: Jeremiah Jones on December 13, 2020, 09:20:25 AM
I am new to reloading and looking for a 6 cavity mold for RNFP bullets.  I want something suitable for CAS, plinking and general use including home defense (if I run out of Critical Defense).  I will appreciate any/all suggestions.

FWIW: I have been casting balls for my muzzle loaders for 25 years.

Go look at Dick Dastardly Big Lube bullets. Whatever caliber you need he makes one and they hold a wagon load of lube. Good for real Black Gunpowder or smokessomewhatless powders.

If you want something close to the original bullet profile used in the 45 Colt, there's this: https://leeprecision.com/mold-dc-452-255-rf.html

On the other hand, if you want a lighter bullet that still has some smack for knock-down targets, try: https://leeprecision.com/mold-dc-452-200-rf.html

For LWGL, there's this one: https://leeprecision.com/mold-dc-452-160-rf.html

I lean towards the first one, I tend to prefer heavier bullets.  In my experience, the lube carried by this one is barely enough for BP in a pistol.  I've not had good results using this bullet with BP loads in a rifle.  It worked well for me when using smokeless.

The second is not a bad choice for smokeless loads, but has even less lube for use with BP.  It fed really well in the Rossi I used to have.

I have no experience with the third bullet, but know of a couple of people who use it for target loads in their 45 ACP revolvers.

I have used a lot of those 160 grain RNFP Lee bullets in my .45 CAS cases with FFFg BP.
Shoots like a charm but does not carry a lot of lube.
