I really need a 1876 mag tube?
« on: April 13, 2022, 02:32:14 PM »
Hi Guys!

Anyone have a '76 mag tube of any length size (I need a forearm length, short mag tube but happy to cut a longer one) they are willing to part with?
I mistakenly let my mag tube go when changing barrels,  thinking I had a proper spare.

Cash in hand and rather desperate at the moment  ;D

thanks!

I get them in the homemakers store - chinese curtain rod - 16mm fits the model 92, 94, 73 ---19mm fits the 76, 86 -- its light, skinny wall stuff but exact OD to fit where the old one went. You would need to turn up new end plugs because of the difference in wall thickness. These curtain rods come plastic coated - burns off ok with a propane torch but dont need to do that for a short mag and the heating de - tempers the steel tube some. I cook em, spin it in the lathe with fine emery then steel wool to clean it up then heat blue it - dunk in oil to finish the blue.

Thanks. I'll take a look.   I have '86 tubes.   They are too small for a 76.

Thanks. I'll take a look.   I have '86 tubes.   They are too small for a 76.

just goes to show its never safe to assume stuff - I eyeballed these from ten feet and thought they allasame

my Uberti 76 tube =18.93mm ---19mm chinese curtain rod stripped of its plastic coat = 18.93mm

chiappa 1886 tube = 17.93mm  - so yeah 86 tube wont work!

the surprise package was model 71 Browning 348 tube = 18.37mm

I guess technically ......rim size for the 76 (45/75 and 50/95) is bigger than the 348 round

Anyway looks like that curtain rod will work unless china makes a different size for your market .

>just goes to show its never safe to assume stuff - I eyeballed these from ten feet and thought they all same

I did as well.  I have Browning '86 tubes.  But foolishly gave away my '76 short mag tube that I could have used.  Surprised me the '86 tube wouldn't work as I am using cut down 45-70 brass.

I'll keep looking for that curtain rod.

Is the "Home maker" store an actual chain store?  I tried Lowes, no go.  Home Depot is next.

nah we have "Spotlight " downunder (woulda called it haberdashery store in the old days I think) ..sewing stuff , all kinds of cloth, curtain material, soft furnishings, crafty supplies ....  first place we go look for cloth patching material for the front loader guns.

Hey Pard , take a look at  ( GRAINGER  ) look at steel tubing , they offer three  wall thickness sizes in the 3/4 tubing . I have used it before for an original 76 replacement with very little polishing inside and out . ,,,,,DT

Thanks Dusty, will do.  Finally got a mag button made up for my short tube.  Hopefully I have copied what you have done previous.  Changed the barrel out to a 24", 45-60 while I was at it. Looking forward to getting it all back together.  Just short the tube.

$100 for a 3' section delivered to my door.  Tube on the way!  Thanks much!

Yike$$ ------ that be steam tube or polished hydraulic tubing I guess??? good stuff and much stouter than what I used but blimey !!! savage on the back pocket...... sez ole cheapskate aussie!!!!

might need to re do the mag button ? they need to be a nice neat fit to the tube......

(all of this $$$talk is nothing considering the value of a decent 76)
I stumbled onto the curtain rod before I made it to the  engineering shop . (my excuse for bein cheap!)

Your welcome hope it works out for you ( Keep W W Grainger ) in mind when looking for almost any kind of stock material  . That is a beautiful rifle and I have no doubt it is handy . Small enough to be a saddle gun with plenty of punch . You have good taste Amigo . ,,,,,DT

Greetings all!  Little late to the gathering (as usual) but another possible source of materials is Mcmaster-carr ( https://www.mcmaster.com/ ).  Options are always good to have and if one source is out of something hopefully the others will have it!

Just another source for stuff, can't have to many!!

P.B.

Sorta my friend, sorta  ;)

First one from Grainer had the wrong internal dia.   Twice the money as the one I needed.  Got the "right size" and it is workable but...as I say, it is "workable", outside diameter is just a bit off. ::)  So it is sitting here waiting on the third option.   Third option is a reproduction '75 tube that I should see a some point, as I paid for a couple of weeks ago.

Other projects on the bench right now.  Once the reproduction arrives I'll sort everything out and show the end result.  Should be soon I hope.  Soon being a relative term these days  ;D

Finally got 'er all back together.  I used Bob's replica '76 mag tube.   Nothing needed past cutting it to size.   I am liking the sight radius and balance.  It really changed the rifle.

Anyone have 45-60 brass they want to sell or trade?   Head stamp isn't important.  And I have plenty of new 45-70 brass (among many other cowboy 35-55 rifle and mist of the pistol calibers) that I can part with.

My case trimmer isn't up to the task of doing justice right now to 45-60 cut from 45-70.
