Bullard 40-65
« on: November 23, 2021, 09:48:11 AM »
Since there isn't a category for such a scarce gun, I am listing it under the 1886 heading.

I was in a gun store when a guy came in with some rifles to consign. The first gun he pulled out was this Bullard. I had to have it and bought it right then.

I since then shot a few grouse with it, but I hope to get a deer with it yet this fall...

Well, I did get it out and shot a doe mule deer at 120 yards, once through the heart...

Very cool!  I've heard of a Bullard, but don't know that I ever saw one.

Your Bullard looks to be in pretty good condition.  Can you tell us any more about it.  Is that original finish?  How was the bore?  And most interesting to me, are you shooting black powder and if so what load/bullet/case are you using?

And finally, congratulations on another piece of history saved, experienced, and appreciated.

Yes, it is original. I was in a gun store when a guy showed up with several guns he wanted to consign and this was the first gun he pulled out of the case. 15 minutes later, I was walking out the door with it.

I have 2 original Winchester 1886’s in 40-65, one marked “Browning Brothers” the other maker “WF SHEARD”. I have shot a 40-65 quite a bit, so this would be easy to get shooting. It shot well enough that I got a couple grouse earlier this season with it.

I load 245 grain cast bullets with AA 5744 powder and it works well if you can hit what you’re aiming at.
