Uberti 1866 Bullet Diameter
« on: May 16, 2019, 07:01:55 AM »
For recently produced Uberti 1866 rifles, is .429 the correct diameter?  Thanks.

Not if it is a .38 or .45  ;D

But yeah the bore on .44's is .429, or at least that is the spec.  Most will be.

Howdy pard,

.429 works, but I found .428 worked better.  Some brands of brass are thicker than Winchester, and can give a tight chamber with .429.  I have found .428 worked in all my guns with any brass. The .429s are more accurate than I am.

As the Lawman reflected, the specific chamber may well dictate what diameter bullet you can use.  Nominally, if the bore diameter (dimension across the grooves) is 429 (today's norm) then the optimum bullet is .4295 or 430.  44-40 rifles can be very picky.  If ... however ..... you're shooting a 44 Special rifle, a 430 bulet is optimum and will chamber just fine.  And with a 44 Special, expect Blow-By.

Sorry.  I neglected to indicate 44-40.  I'll strart with a .429 and hope that I do not start a mould collection.  Thanks.

Winchester and Starline brass will be your best bet with a .429 bullet in the tight Uberti chamber.  Those have the thinnest necks.  Remington, PMC, and others are thicker.

Thanks everyone.  Starline brass is on the way.
