M12 riot gun build
« on: December 02, 2020, 04:53:12 PM »
I've decided to do a M12 riot gun. I found an old 1925 Model 12 12 ga donor with a polychoke and a severe crack in the buttstock but with it’s original blueing and a nice pump handle. It’s missing the 2 small screws from the magazine endcap but I had the ones from my trenchgun build. I have another oem buttstock that I can use if the cracked one is too bad to repair. Have to borrow my buds bbl facing tools again. Need to buy my own set. Shouldn’t be too hard of a build though. Will make a good companion for my trench. Pictures when it arrives.

 :)  Hey Biltmore   ;)

Atz not a bad M-12.  Nice donor.  I notice it's also missing a small piece at the bottom of the wrist where it almost meets the receiver.  However, main concern is lack of fit of the stock in general.  After slathering the crack with epoxy, I'd be want to suggest you Glass Bed the stock to prevent further cracking.

Were it mine, I'd be tempted to source up some after-market "Trench" parts.  Fun Stuff.  Still be righteous fun cut to 20 inch riot length.  Or maybe even 18 1/8th ???

I’m curious if the stock bolt is real loose after it cracked and the stock is sagging making it look like this. Can’t tell from his pix. But I’ve got another old oem stock that’s never been on a gun. Trying to get up with the guy today. Already built one into a trench, this one’s going to be a riot.

The seller finally contacted me but still don’t know the shipping amt.

That sounds like a cool project Ed!  I recently bought a m12 as well.   I was looking for one that had an external choke to cut down as well.  I found a factory 26" instead and will leave it as is.

Turned out that the stock was cracked because [I believe] that a shooter/hunter fell on the gun at the wrist. The piece of steel that the stock bolt screws into that then screws into the recvr was bent. I straightened it out but as I have another stock I’m not going to mess with the bad one. I will need to redo the good stock to match the forearm though. I have a buttplate for it. Yesterday I cut and faced the bbl to 19 inches. I would love to get it done by the weekend to use in our WB match.

Didn’t get it done in time for our WB match today. We had 18 shooters with about half shooting 1911s. I used my trusty M12 trenchgun instead. Ran like a top. I was clean with the M12 and Marlin 1894 but had 2 misses with my Auto Ordnance 1911. The rain luckily held off until we had everything put away. A very nice shoot.

Got a question for the forum. How do I get rid of the old price sticker stain on the stock I’m using. This is after some serious scrubbing with bronze wool. I plan on trying to match the buttstock to the forearm. Red walnut and some brown maybe but I don’t want the rectangular sticker stain to show.

Wow, the way that has bleached around the sticker you may have to use Citristrip on the whole butt stock. That way you will be starting fresh.

Hoping that I wouldn’t have to play in the water. Just to clarify, here is where the old sticker was. Doesn’t seem to have any finish, just feels like faded wood.

I have used Old English Furniture Polish a few times to touch up scuffs, maybe try it, you have nothing to lose.

If it were mine I'd try Homer Formby's Finish Restorer

I had good results with it

Started back on it today. Epoxied my upper swivel together and started staining on the stock. I started out with my favorite Birchwood Casey Red Walnut stain but added some med brown leather dye as it wasn’t brown enough and I don’t want to mess with the pump handle. I was worried about nothing as the dark place on the stock is gone with the multiple coats of stain. I also want to polish out my front sight install in the bbl and blue the fresh bbl cut. Next will be to mill the lower swivel mortise.

Had a request to show my mini mill set up for some of my jobs so here’s how I did my lower M12 swivel. A lot of eyeball measurements. Trued it the best that I could. Used my 1/2 inch end mill for the initial cut after using a center point to find the approximate center of the stock and then moved the work towards the [apparent] thinner side to widen the cut to fit the width of the swivel which is a little more than 1/2 inch. I’ll clean it up tonight. Need nicer screws too.

Your mill  resembles my Mini lathe from Harbor Freight

It is actually, the same lathe accept for proprietary color and logo , as the Grizzty( green) Northern Tools/Klutch mini lathe (white)   and several other versions from the same manufacture in China

Yes, they are all pretty much the same except for the paint scheme and label. Pardon the rust but it’s in my barn. I’ve done a bunch of upgrades on mine since I got it. Added a stiffener to the column, gas pistons, a table base to elevate it and recently a belt drive when my plastic gears failed. A handy tool.

I would love to put a steel buttplate on it as the too thin fake plastic buttplate that I've got leaves a lot to be desired and I can’t seem to find a real M12 plate. You would think they would be out there with so many being replaced with recoil pads. Would a checkered steel Winchester 1894 plate possibly fit?

Thinking it’s done except for decent buttplate screws [ordered] and an original buttplate [bid on]. Might hit it again with truoil. Not bad looking for a 96 year old. A classy older dame who’s ready to rock and roll. Added her younger [1940] brother. He does rock and roll.

I won the buttplate and paid for it only to have the seller refund my money because he couldn’t find it. Duh.
