Colt Lightning 40-60-260 Antelope Hunting
« on: October 22, 2019, 06:32:18 PM »
Having these nice old guns and not shooting them is a shame. I have quite a dew old rifles and I try to hunt them all.

I got this rare short rifle in Denver last may and shot a few gophers with it, but I really wanted to get an antelope with it. I took it to Eastern Montana yesterday and chased antelope most of the day. Trying to get within range of them with this rifle is nearly impossible when antelope like wide open spaces.

I found a group of antelope tha were bedded down for the afternoon and spent a couple hours crawling through cactus and grass to get within 100 yards to get a shot. They never did see me and today I am sore from the crawling and trying to lift my head without being seen.

I got the shot at just about 100 yards and then I had to get it almost 2 miles back to the truck...

I never considered myself a failure...I started out at the bottom and happen to like it here!

That is one nice rifle and a very cool experience. Gorgeous wood on that rifle too.

Late seeing this , so a late congratulation's Shrapnel . Great looking old rifle , and even greater that you hunt with it , in my book nothing compares to hunting with the old ones.  Was to late to see the antelope pic. Would you describe the load used  ?  ,,,,,DT

Here is another Picture of the Antelope, I am shooting 280 grain gas check bullets with 20 grains of 5744 powder. I since then picked up another Lightning in 50-95 Express and it looks like I will be shooting something with it, soon...

Wow, shipped to Bombay!  Could have been used for tigers?

I was at the Cody Gun show yesterday and Shrapnell was kind enough to let me hold and drool on his Bombay Lightening.  Thank you for visiting with me and sharing some of your knowledge of the Colt Lightening, Walter Cooper Sharps', and the Custer Fight.
