Cross-Pin frame vs. Black Powder frame

I'm relatively new to this sport.  I figure my next set of pistols will be USFA (current ones are 1872 OT's) and was wondering about the difference between the cross-pin and black powder frame.  Is one more trouble free than the other?  Thanks for your help.

  I have both types. I don't believe either is more trouble free. You just have to remember to keep that pin retaining screw tight. The cross pin type is just a little more convenient. It just depends on what time period you a striving for. Keep your powder dry!!

The screw was used until 1896 - after it was found that the retaining screw could back out and become lost, while the spring-loaded cross pin held.

Some find that the early style is perfect for them, and prefer that particular aesthetic - others do not - so advice can't be given either way.

I have both, also. I like the black powder type for authencity, and the cross-pin for ease of take down at the range if needed.

Kidd,
One thing to keep in mind.  If you order a BP frame, you'll also get a V notch rear sight, a blade front sight, and a Bullseye ejector.  With the CP frame, you'll get a square notch rear sight, un-tapered front, and a Crescent ejector.  At times there has been some BP frames with square notch rear sights but these are aberations and probably won't be repeated.  You can mix and match the different ejectors if you so chose.

Thanks for your information.  I've handled but not shot a Rodeo and liked the square notch rear and untapered front sight.  I would definitely prefer that to a Vee rear and tapered front.
