In this video Popcorn Kelly models the impact collapsing categories would have had on two matches, the first a 140-shooter match and the second a 70-shooter match based on SASS guidelines of collapsing unprotected categories with less than three shooters in them. it may not have the impact some think it does. It is important to understand that these results described here may not translate to other clubs or matches. Each club needs to do what is best for them and their members.

1860 Henry / Re: 1860 Henry Shooter Roll Call (JOIN HERE)
« Last post by Griff on Yesterday at 07:23:44 PM »
:) Hey Griff  ;)
I full well understand your desire.  Me TWO.  However, Don't hold yer breath.  You won't look good in "Dead Blue."  Unfortunately, in all the years I had my Shingle out, I never saw an "Iron Frame" 1860 Carbine.  "If" Uberti makes it for you on special order, you'll be stuck running 45 Schofield cases with 200Gr length or shorter bullets to load 10.  Yule only be able to get Nine and a Half 45 Colt to load.  Bummer.
Coffinmaker, thinkin' positively, WHEN it happens, it's immediately going to Cody for his slickin' up, and installing a C45S carrier.  Since it's likely to happen around the time I win the LOTTO, I'll have lots of time to practice and I'll become the Holy Terror (winningest SASS shooter of all time) of Frontiersman!

I'd save it for my .30-30.  Don't have a .30-30?  Good excuse to get one!

Round nose bullets in a tubular magazine:  can a person get away with it, or is there likely to be a detonation?
With all due respect to previous answers...  As one who has successfully used a particular round nose bullet in a .38 special loading in CAS since about 1985, I'll say it depends:

1) on the hardness of the bullet;
2) how "round" the nose is, which can vary greatly;
and 3) velocity.

You also have to recognize that bullets in rimmed cartridges don't sit flat in the magazine, so even a flat nose can have a corner in contact with the primer.  It is inertia that will set off primer, exacerbated by the weight of the column of cartridges in the magazine, how many times a particular primer is struck before it collapses the onto the anvil, which can be dependent also on the hardness of the primer.

The Powder Room - CAS reloading / Re: Closest Substitute for Unique
« Last post by Griff on Yesterday at 06:50:37 PM »
Accurate 5744.  My version of QuickLOAD shows that 11 grains of Unique with a 300 grain bullet out of a 22" bbl is going 1174fps @ 10,662psi.  22 grains of 5744 in the same combo will push that bullet 1176fps, but at a reduced pressure of 8,004psi.  Your trajectory for other distances will be off due to the lower pressure... but... surely there's no better excuse to get out to the range and shoot more!  Of course, you could always take Coffinmaker's excellent advise!  ::)

We all know that we are shooters of the Holy Black (or some artificial analog thereof...) But what are your normal Match guns?  First of all list them, (Meaningless trivia) or your primaries and then look at the additional questions.

  • Do you have different choices for different matches?
NO, choices are based on what category
  • Do you have wet weather guns?  Especially those who shoot loose powder pistolas.
They're all ALL weather guns, stee; doesn't get diluted when wet, wood should be protected
  • Do you shoot the same calibers all of the time, or switch them up for grins or just to not get stale?
Again, category & my inventory, (pre-oating accident) dictate
  • If you had your choice, within reason, and money wasn't an issue what would you shoot?  I don't mean wishing for original 19th century versions of everything...
Hmmm... what I have?
  • If you shoot a substitute powder is it because of availability, local laws or you just like the way it works and eliminate the "hassle" of BP?
What hassle?
  • Do you ever shoot smokless at some matches? And if you do:
    • It's because I am having trouble getting powder, caps, (fill in the item)
    (Yes)
    • I just want the change up
    • I'm lazy...

  • Add anything else you would like to contribute.
Because I CAN!  Or I won't have time to clean properly
[/list]

I ask because I have "known" some of you for 17 years (longer for others) and I still don't know what we all shoot.  Even moss backs like Coffinmaker(onewurd) surprise me because they shoot brass shotgun shells yet they shoot APP or 777.  No judgement, just curious. I have resorted to substitutes when I had to fly or was in a location where I couldn't get BP.  I don't judge when someone has gone to the trouble of not shooting smokiless powder.

BTW, Coffinmaker is a relative "newbie!   ;D ;D

USFA CSS / Re: 38/40 serial number
« Last post by Buckaroo Lou on Yesterday at 04:00:54 PM »
On USA parts made USFA's the cylinder flutes are not as pointed as on Italian parts guns, the ejector shroud housing cam is longer on USA parts guns, the firing pin is cone shaped on USA parts guns, the front sight is the same thickness from top to bottom on USA parts guns (Government Series guns are the exception), when the loading gate is opened the little hole where the loading gate pivot post goes into the frame is a small triangle and not rectangular or square, and the loading gate pivot arm is thicker on USA parts guns. As I stated earlier good photos of those areas would help. There may be other things one could identify that would help but at the present I cannot think of them.

I do remember one other, the checkering on the hammer spur is cut and not cast I believe.

I am certainly no expert but those are the things I have learned to look for in an attempt to identify USA parts guns from Italian parts guns. Others here probably know other ways to identify them. Somewhere Yahoody posted a article with photos on some of the things I have mentioned but I have been unable to find it. Up in the thumbtack area of this forum is a post by Yahoody about the little hole that shows where the loading gate pivot post fits into the frame.
