Undecided on a trade
« on: February 20, 2021, 08:30:31 PM »
Okay, a couple of years ago I acquired a Nickel .38-40 1905 Colt Bisley, I had always wanted a genuine Colt SAA and was able to trade for it. Very good shape for the age with a beautiful trigger. I am debating on trading it for a .45 Colt SAA 2nd Generation that I would use in CAS. If I would keep the Bisley, I would eventually trade for some other guns to round out the trio for CAS [Egads!]. Financially, it is probably close to even.
But it is the fact that it was the Grail Gun that I finally acquired and I am a little sentimental about it. Sounds silly, but seems to be the only reason I am hesitant. The .45 would just replace the Vaquero I am currently using and be paired with a Uberti Schofield.
I have only seen pics of the .45, it looks almost new.
What do you guys think?

I wouldn’t. It sounds like you would regret it later. A 2nd generation Colt’s SAA in .45 Colt, while very desirable, is not that hard to find. Better to just buy it outright, if priced right. Otherwise, you can find another if you’re patient. Besides that, your Vaquero is probably better suited for CAS use. That’s what it was designed for. That would be a lot of wear and tear on a original Colt’s. I have them, but use them for matches only occasionally. Just the view from my saddle. We all have to make our own choices. Please let us know how it turns out.

I'll take the other side.  It was your holy grail gun because you wanted a Colt, not because you wanted a Bisley. The second Gen is also a Colt and you would get to enjoy it more perhaps.  Do you enjoy shooting the Bisley?  That might make a difference.  Here's something else to consider if you keep it.  A lot of commemorative Colts were 2nd gens.  Once those have been shot their value is less than a regular 2nd gen, but they are the same quality.  Lots are gaudy, but some, like the NRA Centennial, have a marking on the barrel but with the bluing it is subtle.  I have one, it was a little scratched and had a timing problem, so I got it for $1000 and got an action job on it.  Now, 20 years later, it is worth more, sure, but not a whole lot more.  So, keep used cimmemoratives in mind.  (of course in current times, prices for anything are ***who knows***)

A 1905 Bisley is so much harder to find than a generic 2nd gen .45 Colt SA....

keep the Bisley!

Was your initial intent to own a Colt Single Action Army?

If so, then pursue it - a Bisley isn't an SAA, it was a separate item.

Yeah, I know it operates in single action...

It's like wanting to own a S&W Model 27 and settling for a Model 28 - same frame - two different ideas of value.

Scouts Out!

Run and gun with a brace of Vaqueros, they’re built like tanks and you’ll never wear them out. Keep your grail Colt and enjoy shooting a stage with it once in a while. The president of my cas club shoots original Colt SAA’s and a pair of Bisley’s but he is also a talented smith who shoots slow as a duelist the way the old Colts were meant to be shot. His rifle is a .44-40 1892. I prefer Vaqueros [have 5] and modern Marlin 1894s. I also shoot correctly [duelist]. I also have a thing for old Colts however I like them newer and have some 1892s, too many New Services and OPs.

 :)  Hey there Deacon!!  ;)

My opine is similar to Biltmore.  Keep the Bisley.  Most definitely keep the Bisley.  There is absolutely no reason you can't shoot it for CAS.  I wouldn't campaign it really hard but shooting it in several CAS matches each season would be notta problem.  Further, 38-40 is a great cartridge.  With reduced BP loading or even reduced APP loading, it should be a pussycat.  Cream-0-Wheat makes a great filler for reduced loads.

Beat up a pair of Vaqueros.  Vaqueros take a licking and keep on ticking.  Picking up another Vaquero ain't gonna be all that expensive either.  Insure the cylinder throats on your 45 Vaqueros are correct (most are undersize) and run the snot or them.  I really like Cowboy 45 Special cases with BARNSTORMER bullets in 45s.

A CAVEAT:  I'm not a "Coltist."  But I have had some Holy Grail guns and have ever regretted letting them go.  That Bisley is much more of a prize than some run of the mill 2d Gen Colt.  Just my nickel.

Thanks guys, I really appreciate  your thoughts. Gonna keep the Bisley, it just would feel wrong to part ways with it. I have all the stuff to reload for it. Guess I will see if the guy would want to swap something else for the SAA.
