External hammers cocking
« on: June 13, 2014, 09:19:36 PM »
What is the best way to cock the hammers when on a stage.  I do cock them at the loading table, but on the reload what works best?  Currently I cock them one at a time after loading the shells and closing the barrels.

There's a variety of ways.  You can cock the hammers one at a time while reloading.  Or cock both at a time before or after reloading.  Look on this page, go down a ways until you see "hammered shotgun" and watch some videos of how the fastest guys in the world do it (don't blink or you'll miss it  :) )

I thought your technique was fine yesterday. You're going to be limited in your options based on your hammers, but lets talk at Cowtown next week and I'll show you how I do it and how some others do it

Thanks,

Right now I have a prior commitment for the next Cowtown shoot.  If not I'll be at the next ACSA shoot.

After firing, I break the gun, pop out the hulls, sweep the heal of my off hand down the hammers as I reach for the shotgun belt.  Very quick.  Not world record quick, but much faster than what you describe.
A caviat.  If we are talking about an un-modified TTN/Cimarron here, you'll slice the heal of your hand to ribbons on those little decorative horns.  Take.  The.  Horns.  OFF!!  Don't ask me how I know this  :P

The shot gun is an older Rossi Overland side by side.

Got some great ideas from Judah yesterday.  I need to work on them.  Then build up speed.

Just picked up 3 cases of AA featherlites, time to practice.
