Thanks for the help guys but I have changed direction on this project.  I found a new Uberti Old Model 1873 6 shooter in .44-40 in the old original finish...call it aged 100 yr. look... that should go very well with my 128 yr. old Winchester 1892. Should be here next week.

 :)  FORTY  ;)

The Open Top is proprietary to Uberti.  They (Uberti) are the only folks that make cylinders for the open top and only in commonly chambered cartridges, as .38 Special, 44 Special 44 Colt and 45 Schofield & 45 Colt.

As was mentioned, Springfield Slim has re-chambered 44 Special cylinders to 44-40.  It is a tight fit for the case head but doable.  The easy(er) route is to rechamber a 44 Special cylinder.  All you would be cutting is the actual chamber.  Throating is hopefully already done.  Then you have the challenge of matching the chambering of the Open Top to the Chambering of the Rifle.  44 Special cylinders are usually available from VTI Gunparts or Taylors or Cimarron.

It's a very doable project.  Just throw Money at it!!   8)

And lots of it!  I've got a block of SPG, but I make my own that's very similar.

Thanks! I have a small machine shop but the cost of the roughing and finish chamber reamer is over 300 bucks. Haven't a shop yet that can do the job using my 38 Special cylinder.

My Good Forty

if you have your own machine shop, why not make your own "D" reemer?

should work fine for 6 chambers....

The Winchester Model 1873 / Re: 16" vs 19" Carbine?

Nice. Funny, I feel most lever guns stocks are too short, for me, and either add wood or a cover with a spacer under niether to add to LOP.

Well guys, one year later and I have the carbine in hand! waited 8 months for it to come in, then had Jim Finch slick it up (NCOWS compliant though). If I could figure out how, I'd post some piccies. I did decide to go with Cimarron's 16" trapper, and I love it. And, guess what- it holds ten rounds of .44WCF in the tube no problemo. I also had it in hand less than 12 hours before -gasp- chopping a full inch off the butt. I know some of you will cringe, but I am super excited about it. I reshaped and refinished the stocks on my 24" rifle last year (did not alter LOP), and that helped me feel up to it. The LOP on the rifle is 13", while the carbine LOP was 13.5" from the factory. At 12.5", it is still plenty long enough to feel just fine to an adult (especially us smaller-framed models) and makes it light years better for the kiddos. Just makes a super sweet little package of a gun even more handy too. The only thing that really bugs me on these Ubertis (not enough to get a Miroku though) is the placement of the comb of the stock. It is one thing to refinish and take off wood where it is heavy, but it is another to need more wood. I've studied a lot of photos of nice original '73s as well as a couple in person, and while there may be some variation, generally the combs on the originals seem to be a bit lower and come a lot further forward towards the upper tang than the Ubertis. The comb on my 2020 rifle I estimate to be about 1/2" shy of where it should be, and this new Trapper carbine is closer to 1" shy- which amounts to a pretty serious aesthetic difference. One more reason I might just get some replacement american walnut stocks made at some point. Oh, and the weird flattop on the Uberti carbine's comb seems to be a departure from the original carbine as well- though I'm curious if that varied.

CAS City Classifieds / Hand Built Sharps rifle for sale .45 120...
« Last post by T.O. Curly Jim on September 28, 2023, 08:22:56 PM »
Howdy!!

The time has come to lighten up the gunsafe.... So.. Here is a very nice hand built Sharps rifle. This rifle has a bit of history behind it. A dear friend/associate and fellow master smith of mine, Mr Bill Bagwell and I built this. I got the action from him waaaay back while we were both doing the Soldier of Fortune convention in Las Vegas in the  late 1980's..we would visit and make all sorts of  snarky comments about various things, but mostly we would talk black powder cartridge rifles..He favoured the .45-90... I am fond of the .45-120.. (Some folks found Mr Bagwell to be a bit "ornery" and maybe a tad cantankerous.. I didn't....I found him a man of passions in his beliefs)..He got the actions for the rifles he built from a fellow up in Cape Giraudoux, MO I do believe..My memory isn't as good as it once was ..but it  is one of those actions.

The action is colour case hardened 100% no fade..double set triggers.

The barrel is a full bull barrel by Douglas, 34" in length with a mirror bright bore.. It is throated for paper patched bullets but cast works just was well.. It has a globe front sight with windage and spirit level. There is no rear sight and the muzzle is cut for a false muzzle (for cleaning and separate bullet loading if you wish to go that route).. which I never got the time to make..easy enough if you have a lathe.. There is a vernier tang sight..

We made a pattern welded steel pistol grip cap just for grins and giggles...tarted the rifle up a bit but in a classy way...

The stock is Bastogne walnut..very nice wood on this rifle...

All in all this is a gorgeous rifle. It needs to go to someone who can appreciate it and will shoot it! I will even include a 3 piece  RCBS die set and a 20 round box of unfired cases to go with it.

Now price is $2250.00 plus shipping (I will entertain serious offers as well...). The FFL on your end must be willing to accept the rifle from a private party as I did not renew my FFL so I have to go that route..

If anyone has any questions..want more photos or anything please let me know.  I am in Spring Hill, FL if anyone is close to here that would like to acquire this...FTF.

Thank ya all kindly
