I have a line on an original Winchester 1876 for $1500 out the door.  Of course for that kind of money there is an issue.  The barrel and mag tube were cut back.  It is around 22" now.  Caliber is .45-60 which is nice since I have a bunch of .45-70 brass, bullets primers etc.

I think it is worth buying even if I keep it for a few years I should be able to get my $$ out of it.

Thoughts?

Thanks!

I figured it was a good buy so I told him that I would take it.  I should pick it up tomorrow.

I will post some pics.

Liking it ain't the problem.  Heck, I know I like it.  Liking too many guns is the problem. :-\

I suppose I should have said "liking too many guns and not having enough cash is the problem."

How do you know the barrel and mag tube have been cut back?  I recently bought an 1894 that owner thought had been cut back. After taking some measurements I sent off for the cody letter and learned it was actually ordered from the factory as a short rifle.  I am pretty new to collector winchester levers but thought i would ask the question.

Couple of reasons.

The gunsmith told me so. :D  He has been doing this for 40 years and has a good handle on Winchesters.  He has lots of big $$ originals go through there.  Model 21's, British side by side shot guns etc.  He also builds high end custom guns.

The second reason is the mag tube is slightly longer than the barrel....about 1/10th of an inch.  He will fix that after the first of the year.

Nice thing is that the cut down was a long time ago.  The gun certainly has a nice consistent patina on it.
