« on: December 06, 2020, 02:22:53 PM »
Any one here use RL-7 in their 45-60 ,, if so you can PM me ,, or show here. I'm using H-4198 and RL-7 is a close relative to H-4198.

Slamfire,
Go to the sticky above the open postings, called 'Loading Data for the 45/60WCF'.  The originator(Silver_Rings) of the posting used RL-7 as one of his powders.  Other people in the 8 pages of postings state that they have tried RL-7.

PS. Went through all 8 pages - only a few posts talked about RL-7 in the first couples of pages.

Maybe you will get more responses.

BRS ,, I have read that post … several times ( just read it again ) ,, some of those loads sure seem stout ( and Silver Rings did a LOT of work ) I did notice when he ( SR ) went from 2.30 OAL. to 2.60 OAL. the SD dropped for the RL-7 load . I have my OAL. at 2.284 , have some made up to see if getting closer to the lands shoots tighter groups , if not then back to 2.60 OAL. ( 2.284 feeds slick ).
If you posted what you load … I missed it .

Did you try any of the RL-7  loads ?  Shot some Smokeless Loads in my 22 " 45-60 WCF parts gun used 28 Gr. IMR 3031 with cornmeal filler under a 296  Gr. Win. bullet  , very accurate load .,,,DT

 HEY DT !! ,, yup slipped off today ( to much " just life " getting to me ),, all loads OAL at 2.284 w/ RL-7 no fillers  ( see above ) 2 rds. @ 30grs,,, 3rds. @ 29.6 and 5rds @ 33grs. all w/ .341+ grs. hp. ,, liked the 30grs. but 33grs. did not have a heavy recoil ,, will try w/ fillers ,, also still , will try your mix w/ 3031,, w/o fillers RL-7 left a little more powder than I wanted .

50 yds. groups wider than I wanted ,,, a few were 2-3 holes in one ,, not the rifles fault ,, EYES ,,. NOW !! as far as the 45-60 goes , .......
Again Thank you ,, it is more than I thought it would be ( moving up my list of favorites ) the little wider butt plate I made w/o the top point is very comfortable ,, headed to the shop now,, cleaning brass .

 ( some day o'l son ) coffee's ready ,, Hootmix.

45-60 WCF is a good cartridge and really is the most practical for us modern shooters , easy to find components and load . Did a good bit of target shooting with my 28" Oct. BBL 76 in 45-60  made about 1883 . The old rifle has some great old Winchester target sights on it , a crisp trigger and just is a pleasure to shoot . Had really good results shooting the Winchester 300 Gr. bullet 296 Gr. from my mold  over a case full of ff2 Swiss . Will admit I shot some Barnes 300 Gr. Jacketed over 28 Gr. IMR 3031 with corn meal filler .That load gave the smallest  groups ever in that rifle . Don't think it hurt it at all either . Not a recommendation ,Just What I did ! That same load with the 300 .458 Barnes and 3031 shoots one hole groups @ 50 Yd.  in the  22" RB  (parts carbine gun)  and shows no harm done . Thanks for reporting your results Amigo ....DT

To my understanding about the use of fillers ,, it is to help keep the powder closer to the primer which helps to burn " more " of the powder,, or am I missing something ( i'm really new to fillers ) . Weather here to turn to rain and maybe snow for the rest of the week ( I hate shoot'n in that kind of weather ) ::) , w/ 30grs. RL-7 & a .341+ bullet ,it don't leave much room for a filler ( ha ) . I also annealed the same case's to try this time ( was getting a little soot ),, will holler back.

When I use filler, I like to use laundry lint, from towels. Seems the most consistent, and 96.4% cat hair free. Just a pinch, thumbnail size. I push it in wit a punch.

Using IMR 3031 and  cornmeal for a filler the SD has been lower  , not a lot but every little bit helps . First started doing this IMR 3031 / Cornmeal filler when shooting my first 45/70 Sharps many yrs. ago . ,,,DT
