Howdy folks, good day here, 78 right now been sunny with a soft breeze all day. Good preaching at church, and relaxing this afternoon. On old cartridge reloading, I have a half dozen turrets for my old Lee set up for my older stuff. Very handy.

Went to the last shoot of the year for one of the 3 clubs where I shoot CAS. Had a good day, warm but a nice breeze all day,I shot clean and my times were high 20's to mid 30's. Was a nice end to their season.

Quote from: Delmonico on October 05, 2025, 02:25:11 PMBesides as a modern wiz bang no one really needs, ammo will get scarce before long, should I make you a list. When was the last time you saw 256 mag, 6.5 Rem Mag, 22 jet, 350 Rem mage and dozens of others sitting on the shelf.  ;D

I actually saw a couple of boxes of 350 rem mag a while ago at a local place. But yes, I haven't seen a box of 450 Marlin since at least 2017.

A few of them old Rem 600 Carbines floating around, mostly owned by old guys who might have to deal with a bear.  Buffalo Bore ammo and a short Marlin 45-70 makes more sense than either of the others and even regular ammo would hurt like hell.  ;D It used to work fine.  ::)

Morning y'all.
Coffee and tea are ready.

Montly Safety team meeting at church tonight.

'Tis 58 and light rain. "Cooler. Cloudy. Showers likely and a slight chance of thunderstorms in the morning  then a chance of showers in the afternoon. Nearly steady temperature in the upper 50s. Northwest wind 5 to 10 mph. Chance of rain 70 percent."

I found one in MT, but in 308.

55, headed for 80 in my corner of the golden state.

Today's plan is to do some projects around the house.

A Rem 600 in .308 is what I consider the perfect Hunting/carrying rifle,I've been trying to find one I can afford, but they're few and far between.

When new they were considered butt ugly and so they were not popular, so few around. In the era of Tupperware stocks they ain't even close to being ugly.   ;D

Was looking for fun and found this, limited run. No, can't afford it, no don't need it. Yes, that's right, 28-inch barrel but not really longer than a bolt gun with a 24.

A round that has always interested me, always called over bore, but maybe it just needs a bit more room to burn.  ;D  Should be able to reach 3600 with the right powder and a 100-gr bullet.  ;D

Just one of these things you didn't know you needed but when it comes up, wow.  Everyone in a good part of three counties would hear me shoot on a calm day.

One dead calm opening day my brother heard my 243 shoot 5 miles away, it has a 22-inch barrel and a very nasty crack due to using a very slow ball powder, it shoots bright red flame several feet in the dim light but it likes that dame load and will put 3 from a cold barrel in a little over 2 inches at 200.  My brother hates being near it, lol that #1 would just piss him off.   ;D

Add the 28 with heavy loads and slow powder and the 32 mag with a full case of 110 and wow.  And yes, all proper lab tested loads.

Was sitting around the fire at the farm this weekend, I'd remembered some 28 ga shells I left in a dresser drawer at the farm years ago and checked, were still there.  1 oz aka 50, high antimony, copper plated BB, incline rolled to get rid of out of round, hand counted and then plastic bedded like the fancy turkey loads (was doing that before you could buy them)  Pattern sucks out of the modified barrel but is awesome out of the skeet (0.05 constriction, almost but not quite full open, just a tic makes all the difference)  My night prowlers for the farm, I have a dozen left.

Had good mentors on shot shell loading, I know a lot of tricks, a pattern with the shot spread even, no dense center, no light fringe and no flyers is to shotgunning as the one-hole group is to rifle shooters.  I found several of my old bird loads, since I ain't going to hunt no more I'm thinking about getting the big paper and leaving proof of what I can do.   ;D

The nephew shot trap in HS, I set him up with a loader and a load, right out of the book if you knew where to look. He smashed targets so bad that since he was shooting handloads they did a tear down on one. Nope 1 1/8th oz, just like the rules, but more powder than they expected, but the right choice made it go a bit slower than factory Skeet loads.   ;D

If you really know, a shotgun ain't a water pipe to throw gravel downrange, there are tricks.  Maybe should write those I know down this winter, so much better ammo today than when Jimmy was prez, but someone might care enough to read it.  ;)   Oh and fancy equipment isn't needed, loads some awesome with the old Lee, dies and hammer stuff.  ::)  Just slow, maybe 10 rounds an hour but more than enough shells to get a limit of the Chinese chickens.  :D
