Is one necessary? I have always loaded for accuracy, but curiosity is getting to me, how fast are the bullets going? So for simply knowing the speed of things, what chronograph should I get?

I thought I was wrong once, but I was mistaken.

If I had the budget my choice would be a Garmin Xero.

But as a casual user, I went with a Cadwell, price wise it where my budget was and has worked for me.

A chronograph is useful when developing loads, especially smokeless loads but also useful in BP, to determine consistency shot-to-shot. I used the Oehler M35PB, and still have it, though I am no longer shooting due to arthritis in my shoulder.  :'(

Gosh, this reminds me that I've got an almost new Labradar that I have yet to use!  It was offered to me at a price I absolutely could NOT refuse.  Too many projects, but I'll get to it one day!  ;)  I keep thinking I'll set it up after a match so folks can see what their match ammo is doing.  With the doppler, don't have to worry about screens getting shot.  :)

I would second the Oehler 35P. It measures the projectile twice and gives you a paper print out. I've had several different chronographs over the years and this one is far the best.

Over the years I've had a lot of different chrony's.  I expended the dough (dough for the dough-dough?) and bought the garmin and have never looked back.  I cannot speak highly enough about it ;D

I opted for the Athlon Rangecraft, after lots of reading research I decided to go with that. Thanks for all the feedback.

I've used my nephews Oehler 35p for years. I consider it the best of the "old school" chronographs. As an old geezer I like the paper print out, but I will say that if I was going to get a new one it would be an Athlon Rangecraft.
