Hi everyone,
I recently picked up my first spencer, an original 1860 model in .56-56. So now begins the search for materials to make ammunition. After looking over the forum and doing some searching online it seems the only mold available is buffalo arms heeled .539 mold. The other molds i have read about like rapine do not seem to be available anymore. While I am sure the buffalo arms mold is good, it is also $200. Has anyone had success with less expensive molds that are available or should i chalk this up to the cost of trying to shoot a 160 year old rifle?

Accurate Molds makes custom designs and has an online catalog.  I believe their 54-390A is similar to the Mike Owsiak mold that has been successfully used by a number of people in the .56-56 Spencer.  There are a couple of other heeled .54 designs in the catalog that also look like they should work.

Someone should chime in with specifics on what worked for them.

Thank you for bringing them to my attention, they never seemed to appear when searching for a mold but the prices are good for a custom mold.I'll need to slug the bore before ordering but looks like thats what i'll be going with. Looks like i can get molds for some other antique rifles as well.
Thanks again

I designed the 54-390A and would not recommend it. The shoulder at the back of the nose curve hangs it up in one of my Spencer rifles, but feeds OK in the other. The 54-310A is my redesign and should feed better. Interesting that I haven't gotten the prototype yet, but he has already sold two of them. If you bought one, let me know how it works for you. I will post when mine comes in.
