For a little more info on the Stabler cutoff variations, check this old post.

Quote from: Galloway on Yesterday at 01:37:19 PMYou can use the same bullets and load data for 44wcf in a 44 mag case if your willing to consider that. Good luck

Won't work for me, my revolver is a true .44-40 so that would leave me carrying two cartridges.  Also I'm a purist.

Wow! I'd love that booklet, if it hasn't already been claimed.  I'll send a PM.

The Spencer cutoff would probably be easier to install, if you could find one. They were installed in some M-1867s and most New Models (1868), both of which are pretty uncommon. The cartridge stop rib is in the lower breechblock is wider for the Spencer cutoff, but that shouldn't be an issue. There are three versions of this cutoff. The first one moves to the left to cutoff the magazine. The second moves to the right. The third is for the Lane patent extractor, which has a shorter nose and may not work with the blade extractors.

The Stabler cutoff requires a lower breechblock with a square bottom groove in the back where the trigger plate meets the block. S&S use to have a bunch of these, but they are hard to find these days, and not cheap. There are a couple different cutoff knobs, each of which mates to a specific pivot screw and modified trigger plate, so you have to get a matched set of knob, plate and screw. Ed Knisely would probably be the best source. He has a good supply of Spencer parts and knows what works. However, he does not have an internet presence, so you have to call. 717 (dash) 741 (dash) 2556

The Barracks / Mauser Model 1896 Pistol Handb...

I sold my only Mauser Broomhandle over 10 years ago and forget I still had a Mauser Model 1896 Handbook. I found in in the cabinet and will send to the first person who wants it. The book is free; I just ask that you send back the postage cost if it ends up costing more than two dollars to mail (Large envelope first class mailing cost have really gone up in price).
It's a nice 35-page booklet with a lot of good information if you haven't seen one.

As for the C-96 Mauser, I just couldn't get the hang of loading the charger clip into the pistol and shooting it comfortably. Decided to stick with 1911's and P-08's.

Howdy all, good to hear you're better Slim. 76 here and mostly sunny today here. Waiting around for a new deep freeze to be delivered so finished off the coffee and just watching the news. Fought a fight over the weekend with a mild virus and am much better today. Anyway I will get to pick up my "new" Savage 99 Friday, looking forward to that. Y'all be good.
