Title: 12 gauge BP shotshells
Post by: Hogleg Hunter on May 26, 2015, 08:46:55 PM
Looking for a good load for sass. I have switched from a 43a bushing to a 34 bushing (MEC). The problem is that I am not getting crimp.

What loads do you use? Wads, powder bushing etc.

There are very few mysteries in reloading shotshells with Black Powder. Read the thread in The Dark Arts, a child board, of this topic. Most of your questions will be answered.

http://www.cascity.com/forumhall/index.php/topic,9733.0.html

When reloading star crimped shells when changing the shot or powder quantities, you need to load the same volume of components, as long as you started from a load with a good crimp. I load either 7/8 oz. or 1 oz of shot. For powder I have dropped down to under 60 grains of FFg Goex, but have recently changed to about 50 grains of FFFg. You can make successful loads by making up the volume by varying the wad column. Most reloaders have accumulated odd quantities of various plastic wads. try a few until it works. You can also use card & fibre wads, and it is really easy to "put or  take" cushion wadding to suit.

The scienterrific term for this is called "The empirical method".

I hope you have a powder scale to check weigh your components. Loading a greater volume of powder than shot is a waste of powder. Staying with a lesser volume of powder tightens patterns.

A Lima Bean in the shot cup wad will do wonders in taking up excess room in a large wad when a  lesser shot amount is needed. Put it in the bottom, not on top of the shot. On top may blow  hole in the shot sting pattern.

And that's about the only good use that I can see for a Lima bean. wM1

Mexican Jumping Beans could do your filling work with the added benefit of great pattern dispersion.  ;D

I just finished loading up a few boxes of black powder 12 ga. shotshells. I got a good crimp with this recipe:

-3.7 cc (Lee dipper) of black powder

-7/8 oz. of shot

-Winchester WAA12L wad (the Claybuster equivalent works good too)

Yes, 2F powder.

The powder is called LIDU Black Powder. Made in China by LIDU, and distributed by Corman Sporting Goods, Stanford, KY.

I bought several pounds cheap at a flea market. It comes in a plain silver can with plain black and white stick-on labels for labeling. It's probably crap black powder, but I expect it to be just fine for shotgun shells!

The shot is reclaimed shot from the local trap range, and of course the hulls are once-fired. (or twice-fired too)

Frugal all the way. If there was a way to reuse primers I would do that too! ;D

Just making sure!!  I've done "another" F before in brass shells....It was a lot more than needed, and I wouldn't recommend it without adult supervision (which wasn't available for me)...

I use 3F Goex in my all brass shells, 3.1cc does a nice job with 1 0z. of shot.

...I used more....too much more...I think it was 2 scoop sizes up from 3.1!   Not recommended.

I use 65 grains (~4 cc) of FFg - can never have too much smoke and fire!  ;D

And y'all have obviously never had Lima beans cooked the way my wife does.  That's OK, however - leaves more for us!  ;)

Lima beans cooked with a ham hock...mmmm, make ya slap your sister!

2.9 cc 3f with one oz shot with a claybuster pink wad...perfect crimp every time.

4.3 of 2f and 4.3 of #7 shot in 12 ga. If you are shooting at nite use 1f, you will have a lot more flame out front. wM1

I still have a part box of my first loads with BP.  They were pretty skookum, and I progressively backed off.

Last summer my Sun&air joined me at the HQ match in Victoria. He got down to the bottom of his supply of moderate loads we made up the week before. So, he grabbed some of the spares I had provided.

BOOM, KLANG! ;D   And FLAME in broad daylight 8) 8) 8) 8)

They were my old square loads with 80 grains of FFg, while my regular 12 gauge loads are now down to 60 grains of FFg, and sometimes 50 grains of FFFg.

I like a square load too with 3F and cylinder bore barrels.

Yep; 50 gr. of 3F and 1 oz of shot seems to be a very nice load. Works well for me on the KD targets.

I've gone as low as 30 grs of FFg behind a 10z shot load. Worked fine, just wasn't very satisfying to shoot. Back to around 50 grs and 1 oz. Much better.

So.................I got to try my experimental Chinese (Lidu) gunpowder at the cowboy match over the weekend and they worked just fine! All KD's went down using a cylinder bore coach gun. The first shot was easy, subsequent shots were obscured by smoke! I'm satisfied with the load, but I may back off on the powder charge just to get more mileage out of a can of powder.

Where do you buy Lidu BP ?

Earlier I posted I found it at a flea market, but if memory serves correctly, it was from a feller (Max Morgan?) that had a table set up at the annual Wisconsin State Black Powder Shootout. I had never heard of it before, but I thought I would take a chance on it. I figured if it didn't shoot good, I would just use it for blowing stuff up! ;D

Flatbush - Lidu is inexpensive Chinese firecracker powder. It goes bang, smokes and is dirty but so what.  Goex Skirmish is the same but a tad more expensive and I load my shot shells with it

Diamond Back was a good inexpensive black powder while you could still get it.

It was a little dirty but I had no issues in 10 or 12 gauge shotgun nor 38 spl and 44 Russian bp loads

Amazingly we can import Chinese powder but not Brazilian...

BTW - what I found helped immensely with pattern and power of boom was using 11 gauge over powder cards over the BP and since I do not star crimp - using a good glue to seal the overshot card in place.

After lots of trial and error I swear by glue gun glue. Shells can be used about 1/2 hr after they are glued and the glue gun glue stays rubbery in extreme cold and heat.

I've got a near perfect condition Damascus barreled SxS.  50 grains of 1F and an ounce of shot in brass shells is what it eats.

Lil late here, but I stopped using regular wads, didn't like the melted plastic strings in the barrel to clean out.  Using 4.0 dipper of 3f with 1/8" over powder card then 1/2" lubed felt wad (local store only carries lubed ones) leaves enough room for an ounce of shot.  Sends a nice flame down range  ;D
