Title: Sizing Die size???
Post by: Slamfire on September 24, 2023, 12:45:08 PM
I have a Lyman 457121 mould it drops .457-..459 (20-1 mix) or 11-13 BHN +-. I am now PC'n my cast bullets for all "weapons" ( Drill Sgt. stuff). I am loading these for my (UGLY) 45-70 #5 RB, i am making a new resizing die, should i make it .456 or .457 and PC, or PC as cast then resize to .458, opinions please.

Ah well,

Without knowing the actual bore dimensions, any suggestion would be meaningless.  Your projectiles should finish out at a Half thou or full thou over bore diameter.  Slug the bore before going forward making a new die.

 :) Slammer  ;)

Um OK, sorta my bad.  But and however, if the raw bullet drops from the mold at 457 - 459, the new sizing die should be 458 (based on your bore) and the under size bullets go back inna pot as the undersize bullets won't actually "size up"  ::)

The able woodcrafter didn't specifically mention it, but in your direction, I would think you'd powder coat before sizing.  That may also help with some of the undersize bullets.

Dave T, (laughing), i are a heather'n shooter. Hair Trigger, i did (do) powder coat 1st, then size to .458, i just made me a .458 sizer for my Lyman 450 w/o lube holes it's strickle for PC'd and they all miced .458. This is my first go at 45-70's. I am now making a neck expander & neck sizer combination to use in an old LEE die i  have setup for this purpose.
