'Steam Punk' in SASS
« on: July 23, 2018, 12:53:50 PM »
What are the thoughts and feelings on 'Steam Punk' costuming in SASS?

One of our shooters is bringing his 15 year old daughter into CAS and she wants to do 'Steam Punk'. Suits her personality.

As far as safety goes, I don't see much difference between a Cowboy wearing cuffs, spurs, watch & chain, etc., etc. and a 'Steam Punk' with a few gadgets and gew-gaws on their person. And what about the sequined. embroidered 'B' Western outfits with loads of "Bling!"?

The best 'Steam Punk' outfits are the over-the-top ones that show imagination and craftsmanship.

What say you?

There is such a wide range of outfits now, I think it just adds to the variety.  Yeah, the B-Western bling has gotten way more than even Roy and those guys had.  I enjoy seeing some of the imagination of the steampunkers.

The realm of steam punk, lies in a Jules Verne style of sci fi.  Aside from personal style,  the only difference would be the futuristic weapons and inventions. The rest of it is very much Victorian era based. As long as she uses the factual period firearms,  it shouldn't matter. In otherwords,  no steam or elctro rifles.

I may try Steam Punk myself. The game has all the drugstore Cowboys with broad brimmed hats, 'B' Western and townie dudes it needs.

Steam Punk adds a little flair and colour. Oh - and 'attitude'. Gotta have that certain panache to carry it off.

I've been costuming "Steam Punk" for three seasons now.  I think it's fun as heck.  Lets face it, some of the "B" Western guys and gals shine so much ya need sunglasses just to shake hands.

There is no safety issues I have seen.  I see it as a "go for it" thing.  After all, many have forgotten this .... is a FANTASY GAME!!  We play it our own way at our own level.

Here’s my steam punk NS revolver i built a few years ago. It hopefully will be made into a functional copy of Deckerds blaster.

This is my "Carbine" work in progress for a steampunk.
Made it off of a free pistol (was given a pair of these, traded the other for a beat up Hawken that is also in the process of getting cleaned up.   felt pretty good about all that trading).   I have a 4x scope that has been painted with brass paint, and am slowly working on a way to attach it (the holes in the mid wood are part of that plan).   Hope someday to put a leather case in the copper stock that has a opener that looks like a steampunk patch box.

Honestly anything that can bring a shooter in of that age should be encouraged.  Verne, Doyle, Burroughs, Haggard, etc, all wrote a significant part of my youthful days.

I love steampunk, but isn't it just a sylistic variation on "B Western"?

Sir Charles,

Actually not really.  Steampunk is based on Jules Vernon thoughts of things in the Victorian Era as the age of Steam Power and Mechanization began to raise it's head.  The Accouterments are more of a wheels and gears and coper tubes and pipes, with very little sparkle bling such as buttons and snaps and spots.

Guys will normally portray as a "Townie" or Well to Do City Gentleman rather than some stylized cowboy with fuzzy chaps, vests, snake charmer boots and such.  Much more ........ Refined.  Oh, and feathers and goggles on one's Top Hat.  Much more refined than the appearance of Roy Rogers on LSD.  The look of Steampunk also causes some of those closet re-inactors Apoplexy.  That alone is worth the price of admission  ;D

That Dragoon is way cool!

I'm getting more and more into this Steam Punk thing. I'm bored with the usual suspects.

I've got a pristine Tranter .450 Army that would lend itself to Steam Punk, but it's a five shot. Looks like something Sherlock Holmes would carry in his mantled greatcoat.

"A couple of Eley's #2 ought to settle the matter, eh, Watson?"

A friend took his 1862 percussion Gatling to a Steampunk event at a major hotel in Seattle. It was a major hit with the crowd.

My Good netizens -

when one asks "what is steampunk" a fine reply is to consider Victoriana Science and Steam Technology carried even further.
As Coffin and Quirk pointed out, the original Science Fiction of Verne, Doyle, and etc ....

The newer "Wild Wild West" movie is considered steampunk by many.

We had one member here, "Captain" I believe, who was active in both CAS and Steampunk.

For your consideration, here are some photos I stole saved from the NRA SteamPunk Firearms exhibition!
yes, they really did have one!

I have about 10 all together but the others are too big to attach...

I see the NRA took it down, glad I saved some.
here are some links

Years ago on cascity there was a lengthy discussion on a 36 shot percussian revolver, More recently I saw an article on the patenting of the same revolver. It actually existed, but only one was made.

Here it is, but it was really a 48 shooter;

Oh man, that Buffalo Remington gives me ideas.   I have one of those that is usually attached to a shoulder stock that goes on my 1860 colt as well.  Yup, all kinds of ideas.

I can foresee a new SASS shooting category - Steam Punk!

My wife heads up our CAS group and has decided that the theme of our annual shoot next year will be "Steam Punk"/"Sherlock Holmes" ala the Robert Downy Jr. movies.

We will encourage shooters to dress 'Steam Punk' and award prizes for the best efforts, something we have not done in the past, taking it for granted that people will dress the part, and most do so quite well.

The prizes will be 'Steam Punk' guns which I will build or acquire over the winter. I'm underway with a small red dot sight on a replica '51 Navy which looks 'Steam Punk' already with it's gold and silver 'antique' engraving, etc.

Now I gotta figure out where to put a gauge and some gears. Watched a really neat video on how to 'Steam Punk' a NERF pistol into a fantasmogorical creation.

I bought a set of 'Steam Punk' googles in a local funky shop and the young clerk told me she was into the genre, making up 'Steam Punk' pistols from water pistols. They looked pretty good, so I may commission her to build trophy guns if I'm not happy with my own efforts.

If you're looking for inspiration, consider looking at the IMFDB page for the game 'Bioshock Infinite.' They have a few guns that very much have a 'steampunk' look to them.
