New Holster Requirements
« on: March 17, 2021, 12:49:18 PM »
I recently underwent surgery for a urostomy, which means that I now urinate into a plastic bag through a stoma (hole in my right front abdomen).

This places the appliance (as it is called) in a position that precludes a holster belt going over it, the stoma being at a height 2-3" below my belly button.

High waisted trousers or overalls are likely clothing and possibly holsters on a suspender rig.

Possible solutions ..... ?

I'd be tempted to try shoulder holsters. If you're doing that for CAS, you really need to twist around to keep the muzzle downrange. It's a possible solution, though. Another idea is to make something to go around the exit point of the tube you can tape in place to keep it from getting any pressure from a belt. That wouldn't work if the whole problem would be having any pressure anywhere around the area.

I was thinking shoulder holsters as well.  If the gun in one of those hangs straight up and down, the twisting for the draw/re-holster won't be as bad as those where the gun in the holster points somewhat backwards.

And then there is L.W.Hannabas, local cap'n'ball shooter around here, that has at least one of his on a high belt.  Looks odd, but he does okay with it.  I'm not sure if the high belt has suspenders or not, haven't really paid attention to it before.

Good luck, and endeavor to persevere!

Thanks for the input, but do either of the shooters mentioned wear ostomy bags?

My current revolvers are Pietta 44-40s with 7-1/2 barrels. I may have to have them shortened to facilitate draw.

Well, dang.  All of my pictures from all of my posts on CASCITY now show up blank.  I think it is because my website which hosts the pictures is HTTP, not HTTPS.  But you can right click on any of the pics and open it in a new tab.

No, L.W. does not wear an ostomy bag.  But he is able to draw his 7 1/2" and 8" percussion guns from that high holster.

Since you mentioned the longer barrels, I'm also thinking of shoulder holsters where only the first inch of the barrel goes in a little pouch and there is a leather-covered spring steel clip that clips over the cylinder to secure the pistola in the holster.  One of those would be mucho easier to draw a long barreled gun than a standard shoulder holster.

I believe Bob Mernickle one time built a rig (custom) that had two bandolier style belts with holsters attached and a "loose" belt to keep it from flopping around.
I was thinking about that after my blatter was removed. Luckily for me it kinda healed well and I can wear my rig again, just not too long.
They connected my neo blatter on the original plumming BTW, so I am not wearing bags...

Hope you get well soon

Abeline is talkiing about a skeleton rig. That's a great solution. As I recall, there are numerous makers offering them. You wouldn't have to lop off the barrels on your irons, that way.

Don't know if they'll work for you but I've grown very fond of the DiamondD, 7X and El Paso Tanker chest rigs. I've even made a couple but they're not period-correct.

When I was suffering torn rotator cuffs I opted for this bandoleer design.
I made it this way because I felt constricted by the chest strap on an off the shoulder pattern

My thoughts would be something very similar to a "Banddolero" (Got no Picture).  A pair of them, one with cartridges and shotgun shells, and one without would work well and get the guns back down to your waist.  Still would recommend shorter barrel guns though, to ease the draw.

A Bandolier or Bandolero with the holster attached is not an approved SASS item.  However, SASS and SASS affiliated shooting venues do make exceptions for physical impairment.  So I'd suggest a visit with your local shooting venues and ask "May I??" then have the rigs made.

PS:  The Skeleton rig as shown by Marshal Will Wingam would also serve quite well, with one on each side.  The other solution is to stage your handguns but that requires a flat "table" on every stage.

PSS:  JUST FOUND THE REFERENCE.  It's called the "TUPELOBANDO" and it's made by Knightsleatherproducts.   Taint cheap, but with a little modification . . . . . .

I believe I would try using a rig similar to what Val Kilmer wore in Tombstone. The straps are all up above your belly button. I've actually been wanting one for myself for a long time and now a good friend of mine wants one so maybe I can get myself motivated to finally make it. I started on a holster a couple years ago but never went on to figure out all the straps.

Can't post the links, but:

Old Trading Post.com and London Jacks offer solutions.

Several Lustrum ago, In a now defunct Cowboy Action Magazine, the proprietor and writer, did an almost entire issue on the available Shouler Rigs for Cowboy Guns.  there were a couple I was really interested in but SASS said NO.  One was a real trix butt forward rig for Three and a Half inch Thunderers.  I would imagine, several of those makers are now defunct as well.  "Trails End Magazine" maybe??

I've been present when a gun came out of such a rig.
