Custom Cimarron 1866
« on: March 06, 2021, 10:43:29 PM »
My latest custom build. 1866 Cimarron short rifle, 44wcf, hand engraving was done by Phillip Montarsi, case color hardened parts by Jim Majoros at Victors legacy gunsmithing.

This has been a 2 year project getting the original gun, waiting on upgraded wood and customizing of parts but finally got everything back so I could get it all assembled. Happy to finally have this one done.

It will be shot with nothing but holy black. ;D It's already had a few rounds through it after doing action job, then was completely torn back down to make pretty.

Did you mention the 'Custom' serial number Cliff?   I have a couple of JBARR 'Custom' serial number wheel guns. Premium wood always makes them shine.

Hey Mark, this one is one of the FEND prefix serial numbers. I ran out of CLIFF prefix since Uberti only has six digit serial numbers. Mine are a combination of rifles and model P old models.

Howdy Cliff,

I've seen some pretty fancy Barbecue Sixguns, but that is on heck of a beautiful Barbecue Rifle.

I'd sure want a full coverage buttstock cover on it before taking it to a range!   :)

Did you consider having Uberti do the engraving? Some of the standard patterns on the factory web site are quite nice too. I wrote to Cimarron recently to inquire about factory engraving. The guy there wrote they don't buy guns from Uberti.  ::)  Apparently he hasn't worked there very long.

The factory was serious about that wood being AAA.

How long did it take for a custom order to come in from the factory?

I wanted it hand engraved and the engraving on this gun is not exact copy but is heavily inspired by original 1866 engraving done by John Ulrich, Winchesters master engraver at the time. A friend of mine did the engraving.

Normally custom orders take around 9 months or so. This was over a two year project mostly because of Covid. It was taking longer than normal because Uberti was waiting on suitable wood. They had it all and was ready to complete and ship and then Covid hit. After Covid we received the rifle and it had standard wood, apparently after restart from Covid someone put the AAA wood on another rifle so Uberti tried to track it down with no luck and had to send different wood. I did have to do some fitting but not too bad.

Cimarron and my dealer are awesome to work with and even with the confusion at Uberti did everything to make it right. I wont buy any new Uberti gun unless it comes from Cimarron, they are top notch I have several custom order guns from them.

Sorry I didn't mean for this to become an advertisement but I feel like someone that offers such good customer service deserves the credit.

Thank you. The fellow at Cimarron who said "We have nothing to do with Uberti guns" also said they are not taking custom orders at this time. I'll try again in a year. He'll probably have learned the ropes by then. ;D

Your rifle is an inspiration.
