Title: Getting a lot of reading done while deployed to The Stan.
Post by: Major Matt Lewis on May 14, 2014, 11:22:22 AM
So, when I am home, I am VERY busy balancing a growing family, two careers and a whole bunch of youth sports and such and generally don't have much time for personal reading.  Now that I am deployed, I have managed to read a whole bunch of books.  My topics are rather narrowly defined.  I read a great deal about the Waffen SS on the Eastern Front in WWII.  But what I have really enjoyed was the four volume series that chronicled the history of the US Marine Corps in the Civil War.  I have also read The Southern Journey of a US Marine in the Civil War, which is also an excellent personal account.  I didn't really know a lot about the Corps in the Civil War, and now I have read some really good stuff on it.  I had previously read Church's pamphlet of the Red River expedition, but now I feel fairy complete in my understanding of the US Marines experience in the Civil War.  Since I am done with the Civil War for a bit, I bought a couple of books a couple years back that I am going to dive into next.  One the Border with Crook and LT Charles B Gatewood and his Apache Wars memoir.  I think I am going to read the On The Border with Crook first and then use the strategic information and see how Gatewood ties into it.  Oh, I got a little less than 4 months left in the butt crack of the world.  It can't come soon enough.

Carry On, I will be in the area....Eventually....   ;)

Just be careful, Pard! Especially watch your "allies"! I think you'll enjoy "On the Border With Crook".

Major Matt:

It'll be good to get you back in CONUS, Sir.  Be careful whilst you're deployed.
I got back 2 years ago now and have spent it in the great place you call Ft Riley (WTB).

Godspeed,
Mustang Gregg
(Will be retired in 2 days)

PS  I never got a chance to get any extra reading done in the 'Stan.  :o  ;D
