Great Book as a Persona Reference!
« on: February 18, 2006, 06:37:08 AM »
I've been working on my persona as an army civilian scout with the 4th Cavalry regiment under Colonel R.S. Mackenzie during the mid to late 1870s, and am finding the book by Dusan P. Farrington, entitled, Arming & Equipping the United States Cavalry 1865-1902  just packed with great information and very useful too.  Just thought I'd pass along the reference, but I'm sure most of you are already familiar with this book.

Two Flints, I wasn't familiar with the book, and I appreciate the notice. I'll make a note of it and refer people with questions about post-Civil War cavalry to it. Heck, I may use it myself if I ever decide to abandon the safe, stable ground or the solid deck of a ship for the precarious back of an animal that can kick me into the next county if he gets the notion that he doesn't like me... on second thought, never mind...  ;D

Thanks Frenchie,

I have been using it for specific information as I work on my persona as an army civilian scout with the 4th Cavalry Regiment.  Has loads of information about the Indian Wars; the firearms in use on the Frontier along with army leather typical of the day; forts are discussed also, just great stuff and in just one reference book.  Really useful.

I picked up a copy about two months ago.  Its pretty good, though I still prefer "The U.S. Army in the West, 1870-1880: Uniforms, Weapons, and Equipment" by Douglas C. McChristian.

Anyone know where to pick up a USED copy of that book?  That (nearly) $70 price tag would bite me in the Butt!  And my wife would have a conniption fit!

??? ??? ???  Which book???  Two were named in this thread.  Give Amazon.com a try some times they sell used as well as new books of the same title.  I've bought both from them, used and new.

I buy from Amazon on a regular basis and when they have used copies, it is listed under every product.

If they don't, just check later.

When time permits, I add book titles to the Amazon section in Cas City that is interesting for our special interest groups. This section is built the same way as Amazon and the information is gathered from their site with current prices, both new and used.

SHB,

Go to  abebooks.com  and search by title & author.  Look at the sellers location closely, as they have dealers world wide.  Bought a facsimile reprint of an 18 Cen. field engineers manual from New Zealand.  Only one listed, even though it was published in Canada.

Good hunting!

Steel Horse,

I've also bought used from amazon with excellent results.  I bought the book recommended by Two Flints through their used book service.  Price was still high but I didn't pay full retail.

abebooks are also good.  I've bought some books from them through amazon's used book service.
