"... Going to the wars" -
« on: November 09, 2015, 08:38:19 PM »
Mothers, wives, sweethearts, sisters have long wondered why men are quick to go to war. This poem answers the question.

To Lucasta - Going to the wars

Tell me not, Sweet, I am unkind,
That from the nunnery
Of thy chaste breast and quiet mind
To war and arms I fly.

True, a new mistress now I chase,
The first foe in the field;
And with a stronger faith embrace
A sword, a horse, a shield.

Yet this inconstancy is such
As thou too shalt adore;
I could not love thee, Dear, so much,
Loved I not Honour more.

Richard Lovelace

With Remembrance Day in the offing, it does well to ponder the mindset of the soldier going off to war. And what is a soldier without honour?

In the movie "Passchendaele" by Paul Gross, an Officer asked why he was involved in the war. His answer - "I'm here for love."
Love for a woman and love for her brother whom he swore to protect. If you haven't watched it, find a copy and do so.

After a four month battle, the Canadian Corps took the town of Passchendaele, losing it again to the Germans next season in one week.

"And yes, it's true what they say
Of war and war's alarms;
But Oh, that I was young again
And held her in my arms."

"I won't be wronged, I won't be insulted, I won't be laid a hand on.
I don't do these things to others and I require the same from them."  John Wayne
