Gluing VegTan leather on polypropylene boxes
« on: February 23, 2024, 08:53:34 AM »
My brother bought these boxes for his grandkids.  He wants me to glue VegTan leather name tags on the tops.  Boxes are polypropylene.

What would be best glue for this.  I use Barge for most of my gluing.

Thanks.

Doug

It will help to score the surface of the box under the leather tags a bit to give "tooth" and better adherence.

I have found that today's Barge doesn't hold very well compared to the old formulation. Master Contact Cement holds like Barge used to. It's intended for shoe construction and repair. I've switched to that for all my leather purposes.

Definitely roughen the area to be glued like River City John says.

Another consideration is that if the glue doesn't hold fast, you may have to rivet the corners of the tags down. If that's what you have to do, you might want to seal the rivets on the inside with epoxy or JB Weld to make them fully waterproof.

I'm going to enter a suggestion.

Consider 2" Velcro, I know self-stick Velcro adhesive will stick to the Pelican case.
I used to do it all the time on road cases. ( just use rubbing alcohol or acetone on the area and stick the Velcro down when dry)

Use your Contact cement on the leather & Velcro to join them....
It will hold like iron to the case, but also removeable.

Benefits = quick change leather tags, optional changes to said tags, options etc.

My roadie cases have traveled thousand miles nary a lift at any glued joint.

Just my 2 cents

Well, they’re sticking.  Barge Contact cement after roughing case.
