Gunbelt
« on: March 25, 2014, 10:44:56 AM »
Howdy pards,

Been working on a shooting persona I am thinking Wyoming, Montana or the Dakotas in the late 1870’s to about 1895. and am thinking of a new gun belt. The character will be carrying a big bore rifle either a Winchester 1876 or Winchester 1886 rifle. Now I don’t know the caliber yet, I have been looking at several on the auction sites and there is a variety out there. For a pistol I am thinking a Uberti Russian in 44 Russian.

My question is what kind of gun belt would a lawman, Deputy US Marshal wear on the high plains? What should the width be? I have seen rifle/Sharps belts from 3 to 5 inches wide. What about a holster?

Thanks,
Ruff

Ruff;  Can't really answer your question, but I would use what strikes my fancy.  My problem is just like guns, most every leather I see strikes my fancy.  Also happy birthday to you.

The wife and I have been using a web shot gun belt from http://ww w.westernstarleather.com/ for the last 2 years. I like it so much that I ordered a belt in .38 Special and will be using it with 2x Black Hills holsters this year.

Happy day to you Ruff:

The lawmen relied on their guns in a way others did not so I would think that quality, custom leather would suit that persona.  The pistol would be well served with a double cutaway top slim jim type holster.  You know who would be good to ask is David Carrico.  He specializes in period correct leather goods.

A lot of guys make a combination rifle/pistol cartridge belt, that might make sense for your character.

Best of everything
