Title: Postal Match
Post by: Lite Colonel on December 02, 2021, 09:56:09 AM
Does GAF still offer the Postal Match?   The GAF website states you can do the Postal Match or do it individually outside of the Postal Match season.   If so, how do I get the correct size targets?

Dart,
....the targets are printable from the webpage. I guess the question are these the proper size for the required distance. If nothing else could be a fun match we could do on our own?

If you guys will message me your address, I've got a GAF postal match ready to go.  I can send you targets, rules, etc. to copy.  I'd love to get this started again!

Gentlemen, I've sent the targets out to the ones who requested them.  The match is based on the Blunt system, but at 25 yards.  The simulated distances are 200 and 300 yards.  I've also got targets made that simulate 500 and 600 yards, but they are almost exactly the same size as the 200 and 300 yard targets.  I would copy the targets on to fairly heavy weight tan paper, and the larger calibers may take more targets, with less shots per target.  I'd like to have monthly matches, but right now I just want your feedback on what you think of the course.  The directions are included for using the same targets for the pistol course.

Good shooting and let me know how it goes!

Post by: Niederlander on December 13, 2021, 09:55:53 AM
Sent out the latest batch of targets and info.  I'm going to try to shoot it by the end of the year, but let's figure on sending me your results by the end of each month.  Just send me pictures of the targets if you don't want to put them in the mail.  The course as I wrote it up is a total of twenty rounds on the 200 yard targets and twenty rounds on the 300 yard targets.  We could try just the 200 yard ones if you don't want to expend as many rounds.  The instructions mention a fee, but don't worry about that for now, at least until we figure out if this works.  Looking forward to seeing how it works!

I got the packet and targets.  Shot it following the directions and mailed the targets back.  It was fun.  I found out how much fun/challenge it is at the age of 66 to into and change the shooting positions.  Getting old, but enjoyed it.  I made copies of the instructions/targets and gave them to Dewayne Liebrandt and Rex Young, plus I have one for Bob Swartz.

Post by: El Tio Loco on December 19, 2021, 06:25:21 PM
I finished shooting the match today.  It is a lot of fun but I don't remember getting into the different positions being so difficult.  The last time I shot in a high power match was a few years ago.  You would think that with all the rest I have been getting this would be easy.
I emailed the targets to Niederlander and looking forward to another one.

I feel ya', Ken!  It hurts my neck to be in prone, and I don't remember kneeling that difficult to get into.

A note on how I'm scoring targets:  Since we're shooting reduced scale targets, often with pretty big bullets, I use the center of the bullet hole to score the shot.  I'll always give the higher value if it's close.

Gents, the range where I could shoot 25 yards or greater, allow for bench (as shown or standing)
Prone or kneeling is not allowed.

This is Dart Liebrandt, alias is Lite Colonel.  I shoot a Pedersoli reproduction 1873 Springfield Trapdoor carbine in 45-70, and an Uberti reproduction 1875 Schofield revolver in 45 Colt.  Both calibers loaded with black powder.  It was a lot of fun to shoot.  I plan to shoot the postal match in January.

Good Shooting Lite Colonel!
It is always nice to hear what pairing other folks are using to shoot this.  Next time I think I will shoot my Krag and Colt New Service, or maybe go earlier and shoot it with my Colt Navy and Spencer.  It makes me go out and shake some of the dust off these old relics and give them a go.
Niederlander, can a competitor just shoot the Rifle or Pistol portion of the match?
Again, fun match and thanks for putting this on.
Ken

Title: Re: Postal Match
Post by: Pitspitr on January 14, 2022, 06:13:04 AM
In the past, when I was running it (ancient history) we even allowed you to make multiple entries.

Whether we do that now or not is up to Col. Niederlander
Title: Re: Postal Match
Post by: Major 2 on January 14, 2022, 06:46:05 AM
Yes, you can shoot either rifle, or pistol, or both!

This enlightenment changes things, I can easily compete in the pistol part of match (I have that distance at the home gallery :))

I'll use my 45 SAA
and if allowed to make multiple entries I'll use my S&W Russian
Title: Re: Postal Match
Post by: Niederlander on January 14, 2022, 12:44:06 PM
As far as multiple entries, I'm only going to count one entry per month.  (Otherwise, we could have one shooter win 1st, 2nd, and 3rd.)   I think we will add an Expansion Era class, though.

I may address this again in the future, but for now we'll stick with one.  (You all may have noticed this is still evolving.  You never know, I may be able to talk the General into letting this count towards earning your GAF Marksmanship Medal........)
Title: Re: Postal Match
Post by: Pitspitr on January 14, 2022, 02:27:33 PM
Oh, it already does:
"The preferred and recommended method to achieve a Marksmanship Award is to shoot a specified course of fire that is essentially based on the Army qualifications from the 1880s, but at a reduced-sized target at reduced ranges to accommodate the modern shooter. This course of fire may be completed either independently at any time convenient to the member, or through competition in the semiannual GAF postal match, achieving a score of at least 85% of the total possible score."
Title: Re: Postal Match

Gentlemen, Due to the winter weather some of you have been dealing with, I'm going to extend the time limit for the January Postal Match to February 6th.  If you've already shot it, feel free to re-shoot if you want to.  Once weather improves, we'll get back to the deadline being the last day of the month.

Gentlemen, We only had three shooters for the Postal Match in January.  That's really not that surprising since it's....well......JANUARY!  Hopefully, we'll have more this month.  Results for January are as follows:

Rifle - Ken Claverie - 85
          Dale Beethe - 79
          Jack Bursovsky - 71

Pistol - Dale Beethe - 80
           Ken Claverie - 77

Well, I just shot the February postal match (02/08/2022).  It was fun.  The weather was 35 degrees F and with 3 inches of snow on the ground.  Pistol was a repro 1875 Schofied in .45 Colt, and the rifle was a repro 1873 Springfield Trapdoor carbine in 45-70 - both loaded with black powder.  The targets will be in the mail tomorrow.  Unfortunately I was not able to shoot the January postal match due to a lot of family commitments.

Combination of bad luck, stupid luck and loose nut on the trigger.

The loose nut and his buddy were target shooting in his back pasture.
The round traveled off his acreage, across & through the wooded & vacant 5-acre track behind his place
cross the road, and 300 feet of my semi wooded acreage, hitting the Bay window. (Distance is 1300 feet)
The spent round & jacket were found on my window seat.

Sheriff report says no malice intended after interviewing him just a dumb ass,
So, the guy said he'd pay damages, about $700.

Niederlander, I will send you my targets for March later today or tomorrow.  The match is always fun to shoot and I am surprised that more folks don't shoot it.
It would help if I had better zero's before I put one down for record, but by the time I put 20 holes in the target I have a pretty good idea where my guns shoot.
This time I shot my Company G, 12th Illinois Cavalry carbine and my 8th US Cavalry SAA.  Fun stuff!

Originals are available....albeit at a cost! You'll sometimes see them on GunBroker

I had 2 of mine built from parts I found on E-bay and GunBroker. Neither are such close copies that you wouldn't be able to tell them from originals, but that wasn't what they were built for.

The other one I found at an auction. It's just a copy too. The old guy who had it before me had done some work on it and I had to correct some of what he'd done before it would fire. I also had to change scopes for it to be legal in Vintage Sniper competition. It doesn't shoot as well as the ones I had built, but it still shoots about as well as what I read that the originals would.
