Good mornin all. Been a long while since we yacked ta each other. Been awful busy. Anyway, I?m looking for a couple of Will?s patterns. Anybody know who carries them now. Looked all over and can?t seem to find them.

Why buy? Why not do your own thing? I love All Stohlmans holster book, but only use it for decorative ideas.

Why buy, that is a good question. I tried to make my own pattern, I watched videos and read posts as to how to do it. But when it came down to it I could not do it. I work well off a print, just can't make the print. I got my pattern directly from Will. I truly salute those of you with the talent to create your own patterns, wish I was one of you.

It really is fun, even when you make mistakes. That's how you learn. Leather is fairly cheap. Go nuts ;D

Making patterns gets much easier with experience and more than anything it helps already having hundreds of patterns on the wall that you know already work and how they fit so you can overlay to compare sizing when laying out a new pattern. I'm to the point I seldom have to fine tune most patterns and can get them right the first shot. Still if it's one I'm unsure of I will cut a test out of a belly or poor piece of leather.
Since I make mostly 19th century original styles I was also lucky enough to have some originals to measure and trace as well. Just starting out with nothing I don't see how a person could go wrong buying some sets of patterns from Will or others.

Why not? They're good patterns and highly adaptable. I'm perfectly capable of making a pattern from a picture but am also glad I have most of Ghormley's patterns. Not everyone is capable of doing their own patterns.

So far the only pattern pack I have from Will is the Hand Of God pattern pack and I found it very nice and easy to use. Got it when I first started from either tandy or weaver.....can't remember which. It was a good bit cheaper than his website so I grabbed it.
Yesterday my wife just ordered me 5 different sets from him. I always enjoy seeing as many different ways to do things as possible and then incorporate my own ideas and changes where I see fit.

The Lawdog holster uses a loop to hold the holster to the back of the holster instead is slits like a Mexican loop holster. the shape of the holster makes it almost certain that the holster will come out of the loop when you draw. This is an experiment made from 6 ounce leather. Would 9 or 10 ounce leather make this problem go away? Would not using an EVOO and Skidmores finish make the problem go away (stiffer?)?

Generally, 9-10 oz leather is rigid enough to hold. I've only had a few holsters want to slip up out of the loops. My solution to that has been a Chicago screw to hold the toe to the skirt below where the barrel could get scratched on it. You could also put a stitch there to hold it if it has a closed toe or a toe plug. It doesn't take much.

Thanks Marshal, putting the Chicago screw in the bottom of the holster won't work on the design I have because it is only a 3/4 skirt, but if I put the screw high enough that will work. I was planning on using a liner anyway. I'll also glue the screw in.

You could also try a belt lock between between the skirt and body, but stuck to the body of the holster. That would lock the body to the belt as far as lifting goes.

I've never had this issue with a tightly fitting Mexican loop. Though it does happen with an old Lawrence Texas Jockstrap.

This is the key to making your own patterns and various styles. Just having what you know works allows you to trace it and then modify.
I started out making my own and always have made my own either from just looking at a picture and measuring a gun to actually tracing and taking measurements from originals that I am reproducing but it makes it so much easier now that I have probably well over a hundred patterns on my wall that I can lay over what I am doing to make sure the patterns will be sized correctly in key areas.

I also work from just a few holster patterns and simply modify them as needed. Seldom do I use a pattern without making minor changes of some sort, mostly cosmetic.

I like Ghormley's patterns and have most of them but there is a certain satisfaction in drawing up your own. Both in getting the fitment right, making it period correct and in doing it your own way. I've always been afraid to try it with a Mexican loop because I didn't want to tackle getting the skirt just right but have also decided to wrangle that beast as well. Like most things, I'm sure it's tougher in my head than it will be in execution.

Sorry. He’s a photo of the belt lock I mentioned. Make it narrower and put it on the back of the body of the holster to keep the holster from rising.
