Civilize them with a Krag . . .

Major 2

I like it, looks like minimum TLC to clean and a very cool shooter.
I took a few minutes and scrolled the shops other offerings
and saw some interesting things.
Congratulations. I'm almost as happy when someone I'm familiar with, gets new to them toy  :)
Happier if it's ME  :D

That's a nice impulse!  I've got a BSA Martini I'm setting up pretty much the same way, for the same reason!

The corrosion pattern just cries out "propped in the back corner of a winter coat closet the last 40 years". Bought a few like that, they always clean up a grade better than the seller thinks.

Yep, it's amazing how well old guns generally clean up.  The bores tend to be a bit better than advertised, too.  A lot of times what looks to be corrosion turns out to be mostly petrified dirt and grease.

I've been thinking of having some mini buffalo cut for our knock down racks.  That would be a lot of fun.

Thoughts and opinions welcome.  Tell me how bad I did  ;D

Don't know what you paid but it looks like a nice rifle. I have two Stevens Model 44 rifles, one that started out life as a .32 rimfire and a Schuetzen style chambered in .25-21 Stevens. We put a .22 liner in the .32 so we could shoot it.
You should enjoy the rifle, they are fun to play with.

My mini is a Favorite that I bought for $5 years ago. It was a total wreck that I rebuilt starting with a heavy round barrel that I cut to a taper octagon, rebuilt the action and made the stocks and color cased the action. Did a tight chamber and it shoots better the me!

A most excellent job resurrecting the Favorite.  Most excellent indeed.

In hand:
-It does have a liner.  Pristine condition once the closet fuzz was cleaned out.  Seating a standard LR engraves the nose of the bullet.
-The muzzle has been cut.  Well done, but that explains the  length.  Probably lost 3/4".
-Face of the reciever shows a 44. Action is tight, trigger is light and clean.  Lever snaps in the last .5".  Good case coloring on the block and hammer still.
-It is a Stevens barrel. But I would say is not original to the action.  Photo of underside of the barrel below.  25, 20, and a 1.

To the range tomorrow.  I could see sending the stripped reciever to CPA in a year or two for polish and case hardening.  Well pleased with it so far.

Did they use a .25 barrel to re-line?  Glad it's lined.  It seems very few early .22 bores survived mercuric primers unscathed.

ASSRA guys telling me it's a Pre 44 25-20SS barrel.  1890s.  It's a puzzle.  Those should have had an off center extractor cut.  Initial thought was it had been set back to recut the extractor. But the length of the octagon says it has not been set back.  Perhaps an old factory barrel blank?  Except for the muzzle cut it looks like factory work.

Seller (Gun shop) says someone brought in "Grandpa's gun".  It came out of Pennsylvania.

We'll never know.  Off to the range.

Just under 2 MOA at 100 yards with Winchester white box 40 grain plinker ammo.  As a BPCR trigger time practice rifle that's great.  Needs some Lee Shaver inserts for the front sight.  No ejector, extractor works fine, cases a bit sticky, chamber needs more scrubbing I think.  I'm plum tickled.
