Gentlemen,  I'm looking for smokeless loads for a 350 grain bullet in .38-55.  I don't even know if such a thing exists, but would love some actual data.  Thanks!

The Lyman manual has some good heavy bullet loads using 5744, but I'm almost out of that.  4895 looks like it could be pretty good with low pressures, too.

Niederlander,

I'm no help.  No data.  When I shot 38-55, I never loaded anything that heavy.  We're talking a rainbow trajectory at best, so I have to wonder "WHY" ??  Just Piqued my curious curiosity.

Oh, and it's Saturday morning, no match to go shoot and I'm kinda bored.  So I decided to pick on your thread.

Heavier bullet to take targets down is the reason.  If I can't get it to work for that, I've got other rifles I can use for it.  I just picked up a really cool No. 1 1/2 Remington Rolling Block sporting rifle that I plan to have re-bored to a .38-55.  Would like to use it in buffalo shoots.

Looks to be some good loads for a 335 grain with IMR4895.  That should work!

Can't help you with a 350 grain bullet but I do have some notes on a 335 Grain Lyman Postell I shot back in the day. I had good results using between 18 to 20 grains 5744 powder with no wad or crimp(neck tension only). I think it was IMR. We also did some duplexing with black powder using the 5744 and Reloader 7(about 10%). It shot as clean as smokeless. That's a no-no today.
I can't see well enough to shoot that far any more and I miss it.

Hi Dale
Obviously you should look yourself, BUT 4198 and 5744 had the same minimum and maximum charges for .30-40 Krag 210 grain lead round nose bullets.  5744 is / was a lot more expensive than 4198 4 years ago.

I think I've pretty much decided to start with a 4895 load.  Good velocity with very low pressures.  Plus, I have a decent amount of it.  I'm pretty low on 5744 at this point.
