Rear sight for a 66
« on: September 01, 2020, 09:42:28 PM »
Picked up a used Cimarron 66, but the previous owner had pulled the factory sight and replaced it [backwards even] with a slider. So I will replace it shortly. Do any of you guys have a nice suggestion, don't want to go with a tang sight. Thanks!

From your description, I'm thinking it might be either a carbine or an older octagonal barrel rifle, either of which has the dovetail closer to the receiver than current rifles and so a regular semibuckhorn won't fit unless put in backwards.  My own '66, made in 2000, is like this (came with a ladder sight).  I think Track of the Wolf has a short-shank buckhorn that fits.  I put a Ruger 10-22 folding leaf sight for the rear, and when I was picking it up from a 'smith who had a drawer full of them he asked if I wanted the front sight as well, so I said sure.  It is a very small brass bead sight, but my eyes see it well.

Ooh, I like that idea! Yeah the little beastie has wear on it, so I will presume it to have been around a while. Waiting for someone to get .44wcf ammo or brass in stock.

Starline has 44-40 brass in stock.

I just filled a rear cut slot with a piece of generic dovetail material.  A little cold blue and it will be barely visible.  Especially because when I cut the new dovetail the rear of the new sight will rest on the old dovetail.

Hi

They also have the flat top sight with the shorter base.  I use that on my 1986, and am putting one on my 1892 Rossi.  I like it because I have a better idea where the front sight goes.  I've been shooting target pistol for a long time.  I've had good luck with the Starline brass, but haven't gotten a .44-40 yet.
