Gentlemen, Would any of you know where to find a reproduction of the brass wire and chain for the 1872 Pattern canteen?  I used to see them on e-Bay, but I can't find them now.

Unfortunately, those are steel or the earlier string.  They went to a brass chain secured by a brass wire around the neck for the 1872 Pattern.  My guess would be to prevent rust.

Just found them on Facebook, of all places!  Thomas Frost is the company.  They look to have a lot a canteen stuff.

Argh!!!  Not on Facebook, never will be.  If Mark wants to steal my data he'll have to actually creep onto my computer.  If they're not too much, you might want to order a few as next year's door prizes.

I'm not going to get too excited until they get back to me, which so far they haven't done.  We'll see.

If they don't get back in touch with you, check with John Sutton at Republic MO. He used to make them for the GMMCS

Not that I'm aware of.

The only contact info I have for him is his email address. icmercantile@gmail.com

He was the Company Sgt. for the GMMCS when you "arrested" Pvt. Mike Vice at Fort Hartsuff back in about '05(?)  Maybe it was in the '90's I forget the year now.

This thread reminds me of why I do not like westerns set in deserts.  Inevitably the hero would be struggling walking through the burning sands.  He would stop and try and drink from an empty canteen, in frustration he would throw the canteen into the sands.  This is when my father would give the friendly tap to the back of my favorite head " Look at that dumba$$.  If he finds water he has to wander back and find that canteen".  Taught me a couple of things.  Always keep your canteen handy and topped off and when the desert scene appears in a movie/show move out of reach.  Sadly i did get dysentery from my canteen at age eight, but that was a different story.
