New System for Precision Pistol at Grand Muster

Several of us attended the Division of Nebraska Muster last fall where falling plates of diminishing size were used. We talked about it and came to the conclusion that it was a much better way of holding the Precision Pistol than what we had been doing. Lt. Col. Niederlander ran with it and, honestly, I had forgotten about it until night before last.
What we're going to do is, allow each shooter fifteen rounds. The score is the number of plates hit and the tiebreaker is the time.

I like it but would cut the round count down to 10.

Higher round count = more reloads, (Obviously). Then the Gamer equipment comes into play, as in Schofields. I do like the idea, should save a lot of time as opposed to changing and scoring paper targets.

Thanks Dale!    B.N. Scotty

Reloads aren't on the clock.  Just the time you actually spend shooting.  Our stop watches make that easy.  To be honest, I doubt time comes into play very often, if ever.

1st tiebreaker should be number of rounds used. Doubt time enters into it.

You're going to shoot fifteen rounds regardless.  How many plates you get is the question.  I doubt we see too many fifteens!  (If what we saw at the Nebraska muster is any indication!)

I keep forgetting the rack gets reset until all rounds are gone.   ;D

Quote from: Hair Trigger Jim on May 22, 2025, 05:04:51 PMWhat's the distance going to be?
I'm thinking twenty-five yards, like what we've been doing.  The four inch plate is about the size of the 10 ring of the old targets.

It sounds overly complicated IMHO, stopping the timer, resetting the targets, and then restarting the timer when shooting resumes. Every time you start and stop the stopwatches, there is an opportunity to error (right Jerry?) My suggestion is to shoot until all the plates are down, (a good challenge at 25 yds) fewest shots wins, time as the tiebreaker.

Looks like fun to me. That small one may be frustrating. Can't wait to give it a try. Whatever the rules it's the same for all! You can always tweak it next year.

Looks like a fun match.  So the large target is 12" and the small one 4"?  Challenging for sure.

Next minor question, since we're not going anywhere are we allowed to load the maximum number of rounds our handgun will hold?  i.e. 6 in a Schofield, Colt, Remington, and 10 or 20 rounds in a broomhandle Mauser?

How do and who decides when to stop the stopwatch?

Yes, I was a test engineer.....

And so was Jon that just joined.   ;D

Should have the final rules worked out very soon.  As of now, I'm picturing loaded with five and shoot five.  You'll do that three times.  From what we saw last night, it will take about a minute and a half to two minutes total.  You get fresh targets every five rounds.  Time will be the second tie breaker.

Of course, this is all subject to approval by the staff.

My guess the clock starts on the 1st shot and stops on the 5 shot for each rack.

All hands!

As I am current Officer of the Deck: Dale has explained his scoring system and shown me his proposed score sheet.  We will proceed as Dale proposes and reevaluate after the match.  Any further questions are to be referred to the Quartermaster.

That is all.  Resume stationkeeping.

Shouldn't only knocked down plates be counted and the plates reset ONLY after the first five have been knocked down? Then reset again and all five plates knocked down until all fifteen rounds are expended? Or do you plan to reset the rack after each five round run no matter the number of plates knocked down?  ???
