Title: Replica 1841 price
Post by: Niederlander on November 03, 2016, 05:52:54 PM
Gentlemen,  I found a Zoli produced 1841 Mississippi in really nice shape for $485.  Is that a decent price?

Sounds good to me, or you can get a new one from Dixie gun works for $1200 plus shipping.

Well Sir

An A. Zoli 1841 Mississippi in 1975-77 was about  $295-$350  ....allowing for Annual inflation over this period was about 3.96%   1975-2016

So $350.00 in 1977 had the same buying power as $1,422.40 in 2016 .... I say $485 is fair....

Antonio Zoli made some stout guns  , however the Stocks on the Zoli guns of that era could be Birch ...later guns European Walnut.

I think only Pedersoli makes them now , and they are as Kent said  north of $1200.00

This one looks to be birch.  Not the prettiest, but I'll probably end up refinishing it anyway, and I could try to darken it up some.

Zoli Zouave rifle in the same era were about $175.00-200  now are selling @ $425. - $450.

I believe $485 for the Mississippi is not bad... they don't come up all that often... and when they do $450.00-500.00 is the zone.
as a comparison, Zouave's  are often seen in that same range.

I've been seeing Zouaves on various auction sites for $200 - $350 with no bids.  This is the first 1841 I've seen except for a Pedersoli the guy wants $900 for.  Just don't seem to be many available.

My point exactly...they are/were made in less numbers and the Zouave's  flooding the market back in the day....

They were disallowed by most Reenacting units, nobody wanted them then and few want them now ...
I know where several are for sale $150 ...no takers ....I also see no sales with asking prices in $400+ range on Gun Trader  ::)

Well, I've got an 1841 on the way.  If I like it well enough I may soon have a Browning Mountain Rifle for sale.  Stay tuned!

The Zoli made 1841's will probably be your closest bet for an original lock to fit within the repro firearm.
I don't like the wood used on these early arms, as has been pointed out, but, the Zoli made guns are your best bet.
My best,
 Blair

The wood does look a little ugly, but I may be able to darken it up.  Who knows, if I like it well enough I may eventually fit a reproduction walnut stock to it.

Hope to see some photos of your new 1841. Stock might be beech instead of birch. Is it a .54 or a .58?

It's supposed to be a .58.  I SOOOO hope I'm not disappointed!

I've been keeping an eye out for a .54. The Pedersoli is usually a .58, but Dixie does import a higher priced version in .54 as per the original. Maybe they will go on sale.

Got my 1841, and I like it.  Of course, the lock felt like it was full of sand, but some judicious filing and stoning has mostly taken care of that.  The stock is really ugly wood, but maybe I can darken it up if I refinish it.  Can't wait to shoot it!

Sounds good and you got a great price.  S&S may make a stock for it.  I'm sure the Rifle Shoppe in Oklahoma should be able to carve one out for you.  Otherwise, give her a good finish and send pictures.  I'd like to see it.
