Hello SSS,
Just finished reading an interesting article in the September, 2017 issue of Muzzle Blast Magazine. The article entitled, "The Mountain Howitzer, Part II: The Battles," was written by Fred Stutzenberger. Of course, the Spencer was involved, hence my posting it on SSS.
By the way, The Muzzle Blast Magazine has gone through an amazing transformation in recent issues with the publication of excellent and informative articles and a superb color printing make over.

Two Flints-- interesting posting. Several years ago I visited Fort Phil Kearney and surrounding area that included the wagon Box Fight site and the Fetterman battle site. Half of the troops at the Fetterman fight had Spencer's but the ambush was so well planned that they only delayed the inevitable outcome.

I've been there a couple of times, the last being 5 yrs ago. The high hill just south of the fort had an observer who could see the the wood cutters, and could signal the fort if the wood cutters got into trouble.

According to accounts I've read, Lt. Grummond's cavalry troop had Spencers borrowed from the band! They lasted the longest, but their position was exposed enough and the attacking Indians so many, they were simply overwhelmed. Two civilians, Fisher and IIRC Hartley had Henry rifles. They, too, lasted quite a while, but were eventually killed. They were not scalped or mutilated as a sign of respect by the Sioux.
