Another Krag Question

I was at the local gun show today.  A fellow had a 1898 Krag for sale.  It had a 22" barrel, the barrel had the # C122 parallel to the bore and no other markings that I could see.  The front sight appeared to be correct.   I could not find any cartouche on the stock, but the butt plate had the trap door for the cleaning rod.  The rear sight was not marked with a C and had "wings or ears".  Also if it ever had them the upper wood was missing.  The price was $350.

Can any one give me any information?  I thought it might be a CMP rebuild.

Not enough info.  Might be a Norwegian.  What were the receiver markings?  Was there still a barrel band holding the forestock?  Was it a pistol grip or straight stock?  Was the top of the magazine box straight or sculpted?

It had a barrel band and pistol grip.  I don't remember the receiver markings. It did not have any markings that would ID it as a Norweigian.

Pistol grip means either a heavily altered US military stock, or Norwegian.  US Krags did not have barrel numbers.  I'm still leaning toward a sporterized Norwegian, which btw are fantastic rifles, in 6.5x55.  The reciever markings will tell the tale.

If otherwise in good shape, a decent price for a rifle that could be remilitarized back into a carbine for its respective military.  Any time I see a Krag with a 22" barrel I'm thinking; I could make a carbine out of that!

Well, I bought it.   $325 it has a straight stock and is marked Model 1898 Springfield Model then the SN:  The most compelling thing about this carbine is what appears to be an original carbine barrel.

Well damn!  A possible Rough Rider Carbine!  You done good!  Knowing what I know now, I'd have snapped that one up in a heartbeat!  We need pictures!

I'd say $325 for any Krag that's complete and shootable, and not drilled for a scope or something like that, is a deal nowadays. Maybe the numbers stamped on the barrel were from National Guard use? Or perhaps a movie studio?

Hard to say.  But anytime I see an "1895" on the receiver, I get excited!

After I got the carbine home, I figured out it has a cut down rifle stock, with a 22 in barrel and what appears to be a correct front sight.  The stock has a cartouche but it is unreadable.  The rear sight appears to be screwed to original holes in the barrel, but it does not look like anything in Brophy's book.  The sight has patent dates on the side of 1906 & 1910.  I wish I was not photographically inept.  The sight has windage knobs and adjusts for elevation.
