Howdy y'all!

I searched for this topic and I figured this would be the best place for it if not please move!

I'm interested in getting a uberti schofield in 45 colt, I understand due to the extremely shortened gas ring that these cannot be used with BP. However I have seen a mod done by happy trails where he makes a bushing and lengthens the gas ring. Is there someone else who can do that mod? Does anyone have any photos of his modifications?

Is there also anyone who can shorten the cylinder and lengthen the forcing cone and gas ring? Thanks guys!!

Abilene

Howdy.  I think the short answer is no on finding someone to do it.  The forum on CasCity that you want is Frontier Iron , that one covers Schofields.  If you look back through the pages you will see a number of discussions about BP in Schofields. In particular look for posts from Driftwood Johnson, he has pics of mods done by Happy Trails.  Here is one discussion:

Thanks Abilene! That post by driftwood was the whole reason I signed up for this site! I wanted to message him directly but look like he hasn't been active for awhile so figured I'd just start a thread to see what turns up

He last logged on here in 2022, and on the other CAS site in October 2024.  When he last posted here in 2022, he was still shooting but had quit casting and was buying his bullets.  I know that ain't much info, but it's more than we started with.

Unfortunately, shortening the cylinder, then lengthening the Forcing Cone isn't a real practical option.  The only way I know of to do that would be to sleeve the entire barrel once the cylinder is milled back.

Hap's solution is much simpler.  The lug under the barrel is milled to allow the longer bushing and the cylinder is back bored for the new bushing which is fabricated to emulate the original.  Best bet is to down load the referenced article above by Driftwood, then start shopping gunsmith/machinests.  The only part that needs made from scratch is the new bushing.  It would also help to have an original sample example for show-n-tell when talking to the gunplumber.  Good Luck

Unfortunately, this whole problem came about because the rank and file sniveled "they" wanted the Schofield to chamber 45 Colt.  Uberti and even S&W caved (sales) when they should not have lengthened the cylinder.  Nothing wrong with the 45 Schofield cartridge.  The crybabies got their wish but it ruined the Schofield for Black Powder.  Not that I'm at all OPINIONATED!!

Coffinmaker you are absolutely right! I wouldn't mind the 45 volt if uberti had lengthened the gas ring but they did not so us holy black shooters must now suffer.

Does anyone have good leads to gunsmiths? I travel the country for work and am very picky about who gets my firearms

The Cowboy who had Happy Trails do that is named Abominable Bill I believe. Its been a few years since I shot with him so that's all I remember.

 :) jchiers24,

Here's the problem.  Uberti & S&W built their respective replicants in response to folks who absolutely "had to have" 45 Colt inna Schofield/Russian.  So, they did the simple expedient of lengthening the cylinder.  Quick and Easy.  They (Uberti & S&W) didn't bother to expand the frame to allow for an included replica of the OEM Cylinder Bushing.  I also don't think they paid much mind to the possibility there would be folks who wanted to shoot BP & Subs in rePop Schofields and Russians.  Also pretty obvious they didn't care.  Take it or leave it.
