Chronograph speeds for .30-40 Trail Boss loads
« on: June 01, 2021, 06:55:44 PM »
Gentlemen,  Has anyone chronographed the 220 grain cast bullets with Trail Boss?  I use 13 grains in my loads, but I don't have a chronograph.

I would even be satisfied with loading manual velocities if anyone has those.

 :)  Niederlander  ;)

I must admit, Imma dry hole for your question.  First Disclaimer:  I don't own a Chronograph Machine.  I have never own'ed a Chronograph Machine and admit I don't have a use for a Chronograph Machine.

Second Disclaimer:  I don't shoot Trail Boss.  In fact I have not shot a "smokeless" Fad, Heathen new fangled propellent in several Lustrum.  When I did shoot that Fad Heathen stuff, I hated Trail Boss.

Last Disclaimer:  I realize I have provided no help to the OP whatsoever.  None.  Nada.  Zip.  Zero.  A dry hole.  Of course, I knew that when I started this missive.  One must understand, it's Tuesday Evening.  I'm tired and bored and needed something to do.  If you have read this missive to this point . . . it's too late.  You're already here and can't recover.  I have found however, so long as my projectiles reach all the way to the Wiley Steels, at Seven Yards, Chronograph information is superfluous.  Just don't matter at all.

My chrono died a short while back and has not yet been replaced.  However I seem to recall that 11.5 grains of TB ran around 1280 or so with a 200 grain Lee bullet.  I've since gone to a lighter bullet and Unique powder in my Krag Skirmish loads.

Make sure you get that front sight good and tight!
Civilize them with a Krag . . .

I got 1210 fps with a 220 gc cast bullet, but a couple of qualifiers: sporterized rifle cut down to ~24" (I can check if you want), and I'm not certain the chamber leade is the same as a military barrel.  Accuracy was nothing to write home about, I suspect the velocity was too low for the bullet.
