How can I do more with the GAF?
« on: December 29, 2011, 05:58:45 PM »
The GAF really appeals to me. The Illinois Muster is in October, the Department of the Missouri Muster is in July, and the Grand Muster is also in October. The last two are quite a distance from Chicagoland as well. I wondered if there is any way to do more GAF shooting? Is there such thing as a Local match? I want to do more. The Illinois Muster was the most fun I had all year last year!

Usually if you want to get a local muster started, you'll have to find some like-minded individuals to shoot with you.  Fortunately, we've become pretty much a cowboy-friendly GAF club here.  If nothing else, see if your local club will work with you and let you shoot your GAF guns in their regular matches.  It's a good way to drum up some interest in what we do as well.

What Dale said +1.

We are looking to get a presence in every state. Fortunately for you Illinois has a Division Muster.

I realize that it is some distance to Nebraska from where you are but you won't be disapointed if you make the trip. Another option is to carpool.

Find the nearest SASS/NCOWs club.  I believe Illinois has a fair number of SASS clubs, you can go to SASSwire.com and find them.

Call the club officer/Territorial Govenor.  Tell him what you want to do, ask if it would be all right to demonstrate and shoot your GAF weapons with them.  I've yet to have one tell me no.  Go and Shoot, take some flyers with you.  Most every SASS/NCOWs member is a gun wonk, and love to see different things on the line.  Have fun with it.  Tell them your practicing for the State/Department/Grand Muster.  Describe these when they ask.

Get in Touch with your fellow GAF members in IL.  Get an e-mail ring going, have dinner together sometime, set up a sharpshooter match.  Get together to shoot the Postal course.

Civilize them with a Krag . . .

Still kind of far away, but I believe Iowa usually has a GAF Muster late spring-early summer.

Of course it depends on where in Iowa but I went to school there so the trip would be familiar.

I agree with Jerry, you should make the Muster at his place, I doubt there is very many ranges as neat as his.  Also if you drive a little low slung car we'll be glad to ferry your gear up.

Besides that there are few dang lights out in that country, the stars at night are worth the trip.

Agree on the Muster at Pitsptr's place! The "Skirmish" format is nothing like a standard CAS stage, LOTS of movement! And the place is beautiful, too! Delmonico's pics are good, but they tend to "flatten" the terrain some, it's actually MORE steep and hilly than it appears in the pics.

That looks awesome but my gear woudl have to be ferried in. I doubt my little low slung car would make it.

OK, how about the road out:

Or in, what ever the case may be. ;D

I always use low gear when leaving in case the brakes fail, that turn at the bottom would be nasty to miss. :o

I drove my Challenger up to Jerrys last year, parked down at the farm house, they let me use their utility vehicle to haul my stuff up the hill.  Great fun, and a match experience unequalled anywhere!

That part of the road isn't the problem....it's the part you have to cross BEFORE you get there. Our Trailblazer had no problems. Didn't Dalton Masterson go up in a PT Cruiser?

I was talking with Col. Shamrock today and we are considering coming out to the dept Muster. I hope his vehicle has higher ground clearance than my Acura. It struggles getting out to the Dry Gulch Ranch where we shoot and it is only a few hundred yards off the road.

Check with Charles Isaac. I know he's considering the trip and he was at the 2009 Grand Muster in Ord.

2 years ago Dusty Tagalon drove his Olds Alero in there.

Hopalong, you missed what in some ways may have been the most fun Muster of all time, the National one in 2009 where we stayed at Ft Hartsuff:

And don't tell the Dept Commander about me posting this one again, I had to ren-list to finish out my KP: ;)

Top brass in the GAF and you would wish two days in a wagon with Pvt. Isaac upon someone?  Some might throw you in the brig for that! :D
