Distant Drums is a 1951 American Florida Western film directed by Raoul Walsh and starring Gary Cooper. It is set during the Second Seminole War in the 1840s, with Cooper playing an American Army captain who successfully destroys a fort held by Spanish gunrunners and is pursued into the Everglades by a large group of Seminoles. The fort used in the film was the historic Castillo de San Marcos in St. Augustine, Florida, and most of the principal photography was shot on location in Florida.

There are not very many films depicting the 2nd Seminole War of 1835-1842, in Florida.

Well, I guess by 1950's standards it was almost OK, almost.
Set in 1840. with Spanish American War uniforms.
Arms were Springfield 1873 carbines & rifles, SAA's.
Western Indian stereotype costumes for the Creeks.
But the Seminole costumes were way better.

The scenery outdoes the content.
Florida locations including Castillo de San Marcos in St. Augustine, Florida.

If you have a couple hours to spare, it may be worth your time. But don't expect any historical content  :-X

Thanks for the heads up Major. I have actually seen this film but it was a long time ago. Since we have all the bad weather coming this weekend I think I will watch it again. . . if we don't lose power.

I watched "Dances with Wolves" a couple of days ago. Although not exactly a western, it is a great film to re-visit.

Good movie, I need to watch it again.  People forget the Florida was "cowboying" while the only "white" men west of the Mississippi were Spanish.  ;D

I'd say "Dances with Wolves" is a western, not cowboy western, but it is the west  ;)

I would say "Quigley Down Under" is western even if it's in the Southern Hemisphere, south of Southeast Asia.
