The Powder Room - CAS reloading / Re: Bullet lubes
Last post by LonesomePigeon - Yesterday at 09:14:54 PM
Just a quick report. I made a batch using everything on the list in my initial post. I am thinking of calling it Dummy Lube 1 because I am basically just mixing random amounts of any ingredient that appears to have been in use prior to 1901.

Dummy Lube 1

4 parts Mutton Tallow
4 parts Beeswax
1 part Sumac(aka Japan) Wax
1 part Bayberry Wax
1/4 part Anhydrous Lanolin

Harder than other lubes I have made before, such as Gato Feo 1 and Emmert's. Stickier too. I did not get a chance to take a bunch of shots but I think this lube might foul out worse too. It was a little bit harder to clean. One thing of note is there was little to no leading. Leading has been a problem in my revolvers, a Uberti 44-40 with .431" throats and a Colt .45 with .456" throats. Using this lube I only had a couple tiny specks of lead come out of the bore afterward and those might have been just bits left over from previous sessions. However I cannot attribute lack of leading to the lube because I was also using new bullet sizers. My old sizers were .429" and .454" where my new sizers were .430" and .455". Was the lack of leading due to the lube or was it due to the larger diameter bullets, or both? I don't know.

I do not consider this recipe to be a success because it was harder to clean up than other lubes and I suspect it will foul out sooner than other lubes. I will shoot up what I have, maybe do a test to see how many shots until it loses accuracy and then move on to another recipe. The next recipe will be the same as above except I will add paraffin. Why paraffin? Because that's what I have on hand, it's more slippery and I'm trying to avoid using oils.

34 degrees this morning, and clear.

Somehow, we were adopted by a stray cat.
He is a red tabby and feral; I had seen him around the property on occasion.
Often hangs different places, near the horse barn, sometimes under a Dwarf Palm or just near the front porch. Its been freezing mornings the last several days, but He won't allow an approach.
We put out food (our cat's) and place an old horse blanket under his palm.
He apparently eats, but we haven't seen him use the blanket yet.
Then day before yesterday the neighbor's black cat started to hang with Red.

Thanks, Johnny.
I think it is a gun part or farm machinery part, since it come from a friend who is a farmer and give me some gun related items along with this. BTW, it is 7" long.

:) I'm of the school of thought that the Universe has always existed.  It's just too damn big for some "Entity" to have pointed and gone Abra Ka Dabra and POOF!!  there it was.  Or Is.
