Vintage Sniper Match?
« on: July 28, 2020, 05:02:15 PM »
I was given a flyer for events at the Eastern Nebraska Gun Club this morning listing upcoming events.  Does a 600 yard Vintage Sniper Rifle Match sound cool to anybody else?  August 9,  8:30AM until 1:00.  It would be cool if a few of us G.A.F. "Snipers" showed up in uniform!  I think you shoot at the standard big A. 600 yard paper targets.(not quite as fun as ringing steel) I will call for details if anyone is interested,  I was told it didn't need to be an actual "sniper" rifle, I think our rifles would be fine.

Maybe...

I'd like more information anyway. If I had access to Dutch Al's 1903 I know I'd be interested in going.

Wish I could make it, as it seems like it would be fun!  I've even got my '03 sight fixed now, so it would work better.......

I rechecked the calendar and there are 2 more matches,  Sept. 19th and Oct. 3.  October 3rd may be the best date for me to attend. The August match is the Sunday of the B.R.R. monthly shoot and I will potentially be elk hunting in Sept.  More time to prepare also, I'm thinking 1903 Springfield myself!

Jerry,  If you search ENGC the website and schedule will be available.  If you and Jacob would like to shoot there on one of your trips East, I would be glad to take you!

Well, I didn't really PLAN on a WWII Era sniper rifle "forgery",  but after being the one to bring this up and shooting the General's example(which he stole BTW) a 1903 A4 clone/forgery/replica came home with me. The General and I will be headed the the Eastern Nebraska Gun Club Saturday morning to experience our first Vintage  Sniper Match. I talked to the previous and current match directors today who were both very cordial and seemed to be excited about having some fresh blood, so to speak. I got the impression they would not turn away a GAF member with an iron sighted rifle even though the match is for scope sighted rifles only, and would really think it was cool if they were in uniform. The previous director Lou told me he is a big Krag fan and still remembers seeing Jerry shoot a match in uniform!

The General and I will attempt to well represent the GAF.  How hard can it be? 6"X ring at 600 yards with a 70 year old 2.5 power scope.  (bullseye is 36")

Those vintage rifle matches look like fun, I've shot at a number of blackpowder target rifle matches that incorporated the VSR's.
Also don't sell the paper matches short, in the steel matches every time you make the radio go off or the flasher flash you get an x, in a target match there's only I itty biddy little spot on that target that will get you an x. ;D

It was really a lot of fun...AND we didn't finish last!  ;) Actually we finished right in the middle of the pack. We learned a lot. I haven't had time to come up with a sight setting for match ammunition for my rifle so I think there's quite a bit of room for improvement there. The folks there were very helpful and friendly and the experience definitely has me wanting to go back and do it again.
There isn't anyway I could host a "By the CMP Rules" Vintage sniper match at my place, but I'm trying to think of some variation I could host informally here. Some kind of "for fun and bragging rights" kind of thing.

If anyone is really interested in vintage sniper, the official rules are here on about page 56(or so)https://thecmp.org/wp-content/uploads/CMPGamesRules.pdfThey're pretty nit picky about rifles and scopes

The General is being quite modest,  He failed to mention that at the 600 yard line he scored a 96 out of a possible 100!  Started with a 7, EIGHT 10s IN A ROW, and his final shot was a nine, which he said was a hangfire!( 60 year old M72 Match Ammunition)
This was with a rifle with a 2.5 power scope that he had only live fired a total of 7 times, sighters. The 10 ring is 6", 1 MOA at 600 yards, some damn fine shooting and a pretty good weapon also.

Darn it, don't get me re-started on another one of my many projects! There's this '03A3 on my gun safe...already d/t for a scope...A proper Weaver 330 might be out of my price range, but they do allow a K-2.5 as a substitute. It's currently in a straight grip stock that's been sanded to death and varnished. Bolt is still un-modified. I've had it for years, and never decided to either make an "'03-A faux" or get those pesky holes plugged more neatly than they are and get a better stock.

With all due respect sir,  I shot the same rifle, (mine BTW) and it did not "automatically" shoot a 96.  You did shoot the "best" ammunition I had, weight within 1 grain and runout of -.050,  but I still believe the exemplary results were due to the General behind the trigger!

Well, thank you.

I am looking forward to shooting mine with M72. I'd like to see if it's capable of MOA accuracy like yours is. I'm also looking forward to shooting that match again and putting into practice some of the things we learned.

That looks like fun but 600 yds is way too far for me meager abilities. Nice shooting. I do want to try my Krag rifle at a local garand club’s 100 yd reduced target match at some point. I’ve shot my garand there once before. Unfortunately 2020 is/was a bust for attending shoots so maybe 2021 will be a better shooting year.
