Bah, ignore him, Forty Rod, I don't need a pen to do that, I have the dreaded knitting needles and I am not afraid to use them, Gunfighter style, one in each hand.

What's she gonna do, Del? Write you to death with it?

Got a lot of books:

Illiad-Odyssey...used and showing wear, but in good shape

(Those two remind me of a couple of guys I met last summer: the Idiot and the Oddity.)

Bibles, several sizes...new

Book of Mormon, three copies...new

Democracy in America by de Toqueville...used, but in good sahpe

Frankenstein...some water stains and dusty, complete

Common Sense...heavily used, but complete. one page and back cover patched

The Rapid Piano Instructor...like new

Hennings School Fot The Violin...like new

(I'll make a deal on the last two as a pair.)

The Federalist...used with marginal notes, otherwise very good.

The Swiss Family Robinson...back cover torn, some pages torn, but patched, complete.

Autobiography of Ben Franklin...new

Rights of Man...very old and fragile, but in perfect shape.

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer...heavily used, but in excellent shape.

I also have a lot of 'penny dreadfuls' and dime novels by  various authorse...most well used.

Have many copies of various ages of magazines from The Police Gazette to Harper's.

Newspapers from all over, mostly at least a few weeks old, some much older.

I'll update the list from time to time.

<When she hears that listing of books, she turns away quickly, lest she reveal that Forty Rod has touched on her soft spot. Taking a breath to regain her composure, she returns to the trading table>

I've got four pair of boys pants, three with patches on the knees, one almost new, and one with frayed cuffs. One small man's jacket with all its buttons, worn, but no holes. Two pair of men's shoes about 8 inches long, resoled.

I'd like the ivory pen, one hardwood pen, four brass nibs, two envelopes of paper, both bottles of black ink...

<There is a pause, then she adds>

The Federalist Papers, Frankenstein, The Rights of Man, and Swiss Family Robinson. I'll offer one jar of jam for ten penny dreadfuls.

<Without a backwards glance, she draws one of the dreaded knitting needles and jabs Delmonico in a place where he previously didn't hurt>

Oh, and do you have any bandages? I know someone who might be needing one soon.

Got some in my desk drawer here at work.  That way I don't have to go to the office and tell them I made a boo boo.  (Blood is not good on white dress shirts.) ;D ;D

Annie, one more jar of blackberry jam and you have a deal.

Found some more books in the other wagon:

Scottish Chiefs by Porter...dog eareb but intact.

A Hero Of Our Times...this is in good shape.  The title was translated by an old trapper.  He says the book is in Russian.

The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow...very old, but well cared for, some fading.

Robinson Crusoe...new with a paper dust cover.

Mother Gose's Nursery Rhymes (for children)...very good shape with some minor jam stains.

African Journals... used, but very nice.

Disraeli's Sybil...looks almost new.

Departmental Ditties... two copies, both nearly new.

Books for books, that's the best trade.   What have you got?  What do you need?

<Raises a brow and gives Del an odd look>

Of course I have a copy of Grey's, but it's not dog eared, I don't do that to my books. Doesn't everyone have a copy?

<Back to Forty, with a look of resignation> I hate to give up books. What would you give me for Poe's article on Diddling, and a copy of his piece about the Bugaboo and Kickapoo Campaign? Sleepy Hollow and the Nursery Rhymes would be nice.

Straight up swap?  I feel like I'd be taking advantage of you.  Tell you what: add one more pot of jam and you can  have all that and I'll throw in another envelope of paper.  Let me know.

I got four quarts of ice cream.  I have to move it fast before the weather turns warmer.  Quick, offers, offfers, offers.

This stuffs melting, so let's eat it up.  It ain't low fat...looks to me like the fat is right close to being all through it...high, low, and in the middle.  Annie has jam for topping.

If you don't like vanilla with jam, there's a pot of mustard on the table.  Help yourself to one or the other.  You can't have both.

Annie, pick up your gather when you're ready, and drop off what you offered.

Del, if you want to get rid of those harrlequins, I'll take 'em off your hands, but I won't give nothing for them.  I should make you give me about five bucks boot, but you being injurred and all, I'll let it slide.

< Takes off, and when she returns she is pushing a wooden cart with the items she promised and some coffee to go with the ice cream. She places the coffee on the trading table, along with an opened jar of jam, some bowls and spoons>

There ya go. I'd like the bowls and spoons back, please.

<Dishing out some ice cream for herself, she balances her bowl in one hand while loading her plunder into her cart. She is particularly careful with the books.>
