Gentlemen,
I'm looking for ideas for a cooler uniform for banquet. I would like to be able to wear my metals. Cost is a factor, not wanting to be judged just want to be correct enough so I don't out of place.
Thanks
-
What kind of uniform/ Branch? US?
-
The field uniform I have is the same as the Iowa 49th volunteer infantry Army. Any branch if it's cool ( anything over 70 degrees is hot to me ) .
Thanks

The uniform can be fairly inexpensive if you go with a 1879 frock coat, the shoulder paddles will be expensive as will either the Shako or the later dress Helmet

Love these guys, but they're not inexpensive.
Get the appropriate dress coat, the civil war one would be the least expensive, you pretty much have everything else.

We tend to portray 1870 to 1898, which is generally the dang shoulder knots for $79 if you go 7th Cavalry or $99 if you get custom ones made. No way I'll do the 7th, they weren't lucky. The Civil War Senior Officer's Frock coat or Shell Jacket are the best looking of our era (in my opinion). They're only in our era because they were still in storage after the Civil War though. I may go with the 1872 Fatigue uniform with the black frogs or the 1895 undress. Which pants (Color) go with the 1895 undress? Not at home.

If you're looking for something that's not hot, then maybe you should go with one of the later period khaki cotton uniforms. The khaki's were technically not a dress uniform, but pretty much everything else is wool.
-
Thanks for all the great ideas. I've been looking at some of the "Whites" but all expensive plus not sure if they're any cooler. I also have tan field pants with a cotton blue shirt. I could get a tan field jacket (which I know isn't Undress or Dress) and wear my medals without being totally wrong?
-
Ah, I missed the cooler part. You have two options: the short lived M1898 Khaki, considered an "Undress" uniform, and the M1895 Summer whites.
However, the 1895 whites were an officer uniform, so if you want to remain enlisted, it's the 1898s
-
The 1898 is considered an "Undress" uniform, and can be worn with medals.

Also, if you can get a wool blouse thats unlined, that can be surprisingly cool.
-
The 1898 Khaki blouse would be worn with same color pants or tan pants? 1898 tan blouse work?
-
Oh I forgot , that shirt would be worn with the 1898
-
The 1898 is worn with same color Kahki pants, and a white band collar shirt.
-
That's a good looking uniform, too, with all the branch color pocket flaps and cuffs.
-
Thanks again everyone !!! I do like the looks of the 1898 Khaki uniform.

The casualty rate for the 7th Cavalry at the Little Big Horn on June 25, 1876 was 51%. Several movies and TV shows erroneously imply that it was 100% by saying things like, "Custer was killed along with his whole command," giving the impression that there were no survivors at the LBH River on June 25-26.
-
I think what he refers to is the 7ths long held reputation for being in the wrong place at the wrong time, from LBH to Vietnam.

Yep, everybody WITH Custer got killed. Not lucky, from what i read, the 4th under Bad Hand was the best. The Colonel did die "crazy" though.

Well, it's said that that was because he, "got lucky" one too many times. ::) ;)
BTW, the right wool is sometimes cooler than cotton. I sometimes "cheat" and don't wear a shirt under my khaki blouse. I do like my whites as well, but they did get a little muddy at the last banquet.

Yes, the ones WITH George died. Some of the ones WITH Reno and Benteen survived. 51% total.

Prior to the engagement, Custer split the 7th into 3 combat commands for tactical reasons. Custer took 7 companies off to the northwest to attack the encampment. Those 7 companies under his direct command were wiped out. The remaining companies under Reno and Benteen would retrench on heights east of the encampment, and survive.
Thus Custer's command suffered 100% casualties, even though a slim majority of the regiment survived.

Hi, you know how Jeff Foxworthy says "We just can't have nice things." Well, me wearing white is a recipe for stains. Never spilled soy sauce on camouflage or black pants. This is especially bad because we usually have BBQ for the banquet.
On an actual Dress / Undress Uniform note. I saw a picture of the 1895 and the guy was wearing pants the same color as the jacket.

I had use a bunch of Scotchguard on them for that reason, so was a little surprised that they held the mud

Could he have been a staff officer and so wearing the dark trousers?

I wondered about the second part with the Dark Trousers as I found pictures of Cavalry wearing the later Sky Blue ones with the 1895 also. Not sure what I'll do. Wearing the 1895 as a dress uniform, I would probably wear shoes not high topped Cavalry boots and I think DRESS navy blue would look better. Since buying both a Krag Rifle AND Carbine I got choices.
Do they make buckets of Scotchguard? I'd have to dip white pants and probably the blouse too.
