Title: Victoran Labels & Advertising from CANADA!
Post by: RattlesnakeJack on March 08, 2010, 11:15:50 PM
There are some other threads elsewhere in Cas City giving access to late-19th century labels and such ......

I have been working on a collection of of such material from CANADA, which I am going to post here in Chinook Country .... and make it a "sticky" for ease of future reference and use.

It may take me a few days to post all the stuff I have completed so far.

(Others may feel free to add to this collection - i do ask, however, that contributions be kept "Canadian" ...... or at very least "British Empire" in theme ....)

The below are matchbox labels suitable for resizing and wrapping the small boxes of wood matches.

Block of labels for your Mushroom Ketchup bottles. :)

I'm not sure if this one will resize properly and be sharp. Could be used to wrap a tin of lobster.

I will look for some others later on.

Thank you for posting these, Rattlesnake Jack.

Some cigar box labels .....

The first one shows Scots-Canadians engaging in the early open-air version of curling .... which has arguably become a strong rival with hockey for the honour of being considered our "national" winter sport.

The second commemorates the capture of the Dargai Heights in the Khyber Pass region by the Gordon Highlanders and Gurkhas (20 October 1897) during which Piper George Findlater, although shot through both feet, propped himself against a boulder and continued to play to inspire the charge, for which he earned one of four Victoria Crosses awarded for that action.

The next is just a rather amusing bit of pure Canadiana.

The fourth plays on the fact that, in those days, Canadians (English-speakers, at least) viewed themselves very much as British subjects.

A few more cigar box labels .....

The first commemorates the adoption by the Province of British Columbia of its first Coat of Arms in 1895.

The next emphasizes that no Canadian-grown tobacco was used as filler (thus ensuring a milder smoke.)

The third depicts a scene from the opposite end of this vast nation from British Columbia.

Finally, the "national rodent", flanked by sprays of maple leaves .... ultra Canuck, eh?

One last cigar box label .... this one featuring the the three main British nationalities which made up so much of the English-speaking population of Canada .....

Then a very funky 'Tomato Chutnee' label relying heavily on a testimonial by Canada's first Prime Minister, Sir John A. MacDonald.

Finally, biscuit and soap labels ....

The soap label in the previous post shows Kingston, Ontario, as the location of the manufacturer.

The single coffee label featured in this post is from Kingston also.
I am featuring it by itself because I am rather pleased with the way my "'reconstruction" turned out.
The large image below is what I downloaded.  Click on the thumbnail below it to see the final product .....

Very cool! (not just the weather) As a former Winnipegger now living down South it is great to see the Canucks online. Check out this old box underneath my saddle pockets. Not quite as old as your labels but ... Found a Hudson Bay blanket at a second hand store down here, not the kind of thing you see everyday in Alabama.

Rattlesnake Jack, were do you find all the wonderful old labels and such?  Bravo.

and no, I wouldn't think Hudson's Bay blankets abound in craigkennedy's area either.  Good find sir.
