1876 scoped ?

Hi, i'm think perhaps install a malcolm leatherwood scope on one off my uberti 1876  . I never see a scope one these guns do you think that will be existed in the old west ?

I have one original scoped '76  on my list, that was in the collection of a friend of mine.  I remember when he purchased this gun several years ago at the Colorado Gun Collectors show in Denver.  At that time, I had a chance to carefuly examine the gun and record it on my list.  It is a .45-60 caliber rifle, in the 36XXX serial range (1883).  This gun is in near new condition, with 28" extra heavy octagon barrel and full magazine.  It is equiped with a 30" tube scope (no makers name) on special made Slotterbeck scope mounts.  The scope was obviously mounted by Slotterbeck in his San Fransisco shop.  This gun shows no other specail order features.

The leatherwood scope is "period" in appearance, and would be appropriate on your 1876.  I do not have one on any of my 1876s, but I do have one mounted on an 1873.

Check with Leatherwood direct.  They may have the mounts you need.

That's a nice set up, Snake River James.   How is it working out for long range events?  The one I have mounted on my 1873 is a pleasure for my old eyes, but a PITA to adjust when shooting BP cartridge silhouette.    I finally have it on the run, but it could benefit from a more easily repeatable adjustment system.  Oh well, that's period technology for ya!

I got a William Malcom Scope from Powder Inc . 877-833-1799 talk to Jerry he has the scope and mounts .they are easy to mount and no drilling or taping . the front mount replaces your rear sight and the rear mount slides on   the rail where your dust cover is .
In other words remove your rear sight and remove you duster cover and that's where they go .

Here are some pics of my "Wm Malcolm" scope mounted on a 73.  The rear mount does slide onto the dust cover rails, but a single hole must be tapped into the rail in order to secure the mount.  Even the modest recoil of the 44WCF will loosen and move the scope and scope mount. 





This is no big deal, and if the scope is removed and the dust cover replaced, operation and appearance is unaffected by the tapped hole.

Now I know what that hole is for . I didn't tap mine and I shot it . I prefer Iron Sight over scopes .

I once mounted a Malcolm on one of my Henry rifles.  It was real fun.  Well, it was real.  It was not much fun.  Took an already heavy rifle and made it weigh a TON.  There is a reason Munisha doesn't shoulder hers in Wild Wild West.  Trust me!!

Don't plan on shouldering it. I don't shoulder what I already use. Even deer hunting, I rest it on something...lol
I don't even shoulder my dad's Winchester 1886 45-70...scoped....and I enjoy shooting it.!
