Yeah, heard about John Prine, about Sunday, at first they didn't think he was going to make it but is getting better, he recently survived lung cancer and only has one lung.

I don't think they really need any gimmick to sell ARs right now. Stopped by a LGS on the way home, his AR rack is nearly empty. All he's got left is some of the high end ones.
At Wally World, got a 4 pack of "mega roll" Cottonell. Perhaps the great TP drought is over.

Greetings all.
Life here is boring. Pretty much everything is closed down on base. We're also going back 100 years to 1920 with a full blown prohibition on intoxicating beverages. So that's fun. I'm not terribly upset by it, but I was kind of looking forward to a Cold One this weekend. Such is life.

Rider coming in.

There is a segment of the Pony Express Trail that comes into Carson City, NV. Helped to dedicate a marker near Dayton Nv. That now runs through a part of land that is now the (Mound House Bunny Ranch). It ran close to the route US 50, now a major Highway into Carson City, then over the Carson and Sierra ranges into Sacramento.
Being held hostage for so long I’ve been going through my thoughts and stuff on the history of the area. As the activity here seems to be dropping off, I was wondering if anyone else has dug into the back story of the area they live in. I know there are a lot of us that do so, but maybe others have stories to tell?

Indeed the Florida Frontier is rich in history and pioneer life and the cattle wars of the 1870s in central Florida .

My better-half's ancestors moved to this area of WI in the 1850's. We live on land that Baldwin Sears land patented in 1852. He was the husband of my better-half's great-great-great-great aunt. My mother-in-law lives on land settled by my better-half's great-great-great grandmother.
The township is Leon. In the 1850 census is was called Indian Sands. During the census, the county was Marquette. In 1850, it was divided making Marquette, Green Lake and Waushara counties. We live in Waushara.
My Brooks ancestors moved to the town of Lind, Waupaca county, in 1855. This is a 10 minute drive north.

Biscuits and gravy for breakfast. Hopefully the gamers and Netflixers will take a break later so church won't have to buffer.
Had some ancestors on my Dad's side of the family in the area as early as 1850. GG Grandmother was born in Mo I think before 1840. Colvin and Jefferies families came in the 1850s, all settled within a 30 minute drive from where I am now. First Richardson ancestor came sometime in the 1870s, was in Indiana and Kentucky before that.
Don't have nearly as much on my Mom's side. So far most of my searching has been with a free website of census data, and it doesn't produce many results for them.

Afternoon all.
Sheppard AFB is still here. Still on lockdown. Still nothing to do. Weather has been cool, with a pretty steady 20mph wind. Makes marching fun.
On the subject of ancestors, on my paternal line, we can trace them back to Ireland in the 1740s, and into the Carolinas later. One fought in the Revolution. Then they went to Arkansas, and were there until 1905. Then the went to California, where the family has stayed until today.
Maternally, her family came from Germany in the 1860s, to Boston. Then on to Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas. Then they all moved to California between 1940-1970. So that's my family tree.

Most of the history of my areas came after the move to the West Coast, but I have learned a tad more about the area of my birth. I learned that the name of the city I called home for the 1st twenty something years of my life was a French word “Racine” on the “Root” river. “Racine” is French for “Root”. Evidently when French trappers first found the mouth of the river flowing into lake Michigan they almost passed it by because it was clogged with logs and tree roots.
Besides being the home of J. I. Case Manufacturing (the name of High school I graduated from in ’69), S. C. Johnson, Insinkerator disposals, Horlicks Malted Milk Balls, I never really understood what the city gave to later history until I moved away.
Our family was rather spread out across the Midwest (Wisconsin, Illinois and Michigan), But did have an established base of local family members as is evident by the article in the Racine Journal Times. I was about 8 months old at the time, and one to the last 23 great grand kids.
-
By the way, always refer to him as Grandpa with the mustache.
This was the property they owned, lived in and refused to move out of until they both had passed!
I think the kid in the middle of the table with his back to the camera was me.

Who took that bottom photo Mathew Brady?
-
I'm not sure, but Brady had been dead for 51-52 years when this was taken. I have no idea of who of my "then extend family" my have taken the photo. I don't really recognize anyone in the picture, but do remember the tar paper shack they lived in as I got older. Again, I was only about 3-4 years old then. Found the photo in an old album my mother had just before her passing. Wish she had put more notes on the backs of the photos so I could ID more of the people in this and other snapshots.

Some of the first settlers in Nebraska were my ancestors. Carman's, Parrish's and Hickey's.
Great Great Grandparents were strong man and Fat Lady in the circus and toured Europe and made cheese at home.
OK, this was from the May 17th 1997 Tecumseh Chieftain. I Transcribed the text because the scans were hard to read, this couple was my Great Great Grandparents.
All the living grandchildren have passed on since this was written.
A Wager Brings Hickey Family to Circus Notice
At one time Johnson County claimed the honor of having the largest man (and the largest in weight and height) family in the state and even in the country. These gargantuan of humanity were Mr. and Mrs. Ishmael Hickey and seven children, but the main importances were Mr. and Mrs. Hickey and daughter Letha, all of Spring Creek Precinct.
As the story was told, they were at one time members of the Ringling Brothers Barnum & Bailey Circus.
The Circus is coming, the circus is coming could be heard all around the square in Tecumseh. Posters were plastered all over board fences, on store fronts and any other available surface, telling of the arrival of the circus in town.
At that time, in 1881, S. W. Swart was editor of the Tecumseh Chieftain, and upon reading the advertising material on display, a thought came to his mind. He'd wager that the circus fat people couldn%u2019t compete with Johnson County%u2019s own Ishmael Hickey and family.
With this in mind, Swart contacted the circus manager upon his arrival in Tecumseh and made a bet with the man that he knew a family near Tecumseh would not only outweigh the circus fat people, but were also bigger in build.
Then Swart sent a message out to the Hickey farmstead, requesting Ishmael, his wife Elizabeth and daughter Letha, come to town on a matter of great importance.
When the Hickey wagon rumbled into town, Swat was on hand to accompany them to the fair grounds and collect his wager. The circus manager wanted to hire them on the spot, and later they did join the circus.
The Hickey not only outweighed the previous circus folks, they were also taller.
In his prime Ishmael Hickey Weighed in excess of 480 pounds and was 6 foot 7 inches tall, his wife stood 6 foot tall and weighed 420 pounds and their little daughter Letha weighed 320 pounds and was over 6 foot tall.
It was noted on occasion when the three Hickey's went to town, be it Tecumseh or Lincoln, that their names usually appeared in the paper.
The three had a special lumber wagon which they traveled in. It was equipped with three spring seats, on for each and it took a strong team to pull that heavy load.
The Hickey's were also a favorite at the county fair, when the boys, taller and heavier than most, would win the races and wrestling contests and Ishmael was on hand to break up any fights. He was known for his ability. That is he would maneuver his way between the disputers and butt them apart.
Some of the old newspaper reports of the family went as follows:
June 25, 1881-General Hickey was getting ready for hot weather. He was having a pond built around his house.
July 16, 1881-General Hickey was offered a good salary to go with the show that recently visited Tecumseh. He declined, The Grand Circus Royale, W. C. Coupe's Biggest Show in the World, combined with the Great Parish Hippodrome was the title of the show.
September 17, 1881- Ishmael Hickey thinks of starting in the show business as soon as the weather permits.
September 17, 1881-Ishmael Hickey, the largest man in the state was exhibiting his remarkable obesity to the Missourians. Mr. Hickey's weight approximates 500 avoirdupois.
October 1, 1881-Atchison Champion-A trio of heavy weights, consisting of J.C. Haines of Missouri, who weighed 480 pounds and his two daughters, buxom females of 481 and 430 pounds, respectfully arrived in the city yesterday and will be on exhibition at the fair as mountains of flesh. Tecumseh Chieftain-We point with pride to our Spring Creek citizen, Ishmael Hickey Esquire, and challenge successful competition.
November 5, 1881-General Hickey was in Illinois showing his phiz to the suckers.
November 26, 1881-Hickey belongs to us. He has lived here over 20 years. Corn, pork and the salubrious climate of southeast Nebraska have made him the man he is.
April 29, 1882-The cheese factory is going full blast. General Hickey who has been visiting in Illinois is expected to home soon. He could be used to advantage in the press department of the cheese factory.
June 3, 1882-Your Spring Creek correspondent visited the cheese factory of the Hickey brothers, a few days ago and saw the thrift and enterprise on all sides. Cheese will be made from the milk of 35 cows and butter from 200. Their mammoth churn is run by horsepower, but next year they intend to use the waters of Spring Creek for that purpose. It takes money and hard work to run a cheese factory and creamery successfully, and the proprietors have spared no expense for the most improved machinery.
Prosperity seemed to be with the Hickeys for the first 20 years after they came from Illinois, but two consecutive floods destroyed their cheese factory.
June 23, 1883-The night of June 16th it commenced raining about 8 o%u2019clock and rained all night. The streams in this section of the country were overflowing, which spread from bluff to bluff. Bridges, fences, stock and everything movable was swept away. Only one bridge was left on Spring Creek. And that was situated on the Johnson County line between Otoe and Johnson County. Hickey Brothers loss was about a $1000 in grain and fences.
Water was reported about three feet deep in the depot in Talmage. At Brock the houses were moved off their foundations; water in the stores was six foot deep.
June 30, 1883-The evening of Friday June 22, another rain began about 9'clock. Five inches was recorded. We are informed by the commissioners that out of 160 bridges in the county over 12 feet long, only 10 withstood the high waters.
At the Hickey homestead about six miles north and two and a half miles east of Tecumseh; on the Brownville road buildings were moved off their foundations or completely destroyed. The family had taken refuge in the top of the barn, and had seen many cattle and hogs swept down Spring Creek.
Plowed ground had been smoothed and the top soil completely gone. Trees were uprooted and clogging the creek, causing even worse flooding.
The cheese factory was a complete loss and was never reopened. But the family continued to farm there until Ishmael's death in 1885. Later the farm was sold to the late Charles Feurer.
Mr. and Mrs. Hickey and Letha traveled for a few years with the circus, visiting many states, England, and countries on the European continent.
Six of Hickey's grandchildren are still living. These include Mrs. Opal Parrish of Tecumseh, Mrs. Edna Parrish of Sterling, Mrs. Charles (Edus) Parrish and Chester Hickey of Elk Creek, and Cloyd Hickey of Union and Water Hickey of Bowling Green Missouri.

More rain today

No rain here, a beautiful sunny morning. Off for the second of three "comp" days("X" days in rural carrier talk). Worked my tail off around the place yesterday, more of the same today. Cleaned the carburetor on the tiller yesterday, had some kind of clear jellied glop in it, I blame it on alcohol gas. Maybe as cheap as gas is right now, I may start using 91 octane in it to avoid the alcohol.
Built a new door for the chicken house/junk shed.
Had to drive to Lebanon to pick up one of my Blazers after a tranny repair, and pick up some more steel fence posts , some of which I installed after I got home.
Will try and make some time for shooting today, along with more fencing and perhaps being a "substitute teacher" some more if needed. Garden time also planned. Don't miss my work a bit.
-
I have been thinking of adding a automatic chicken door on the hen house. Not sure I really want to spend the money. Yet on those wet or cold mornings or nights it might be worth it.
-
Gut the 30'06 loaded and shot some off hand in the M1917 ...discovered a flaw in my home bullet stop galley..
I face east as I shoot into the pole barn (see photo ) the targets would normally be clipped on front.
However at 10AM the sun was facing me and put the targets in shadow, effectively blacking them out.
Wasn't an issue back in Dec. as the sun was well South now that it is marching back North ....Morning shooting is too bright
or should I say not to bright :-\
Otherwise, when the sun is high overhead or behind as in the afternoon BOB's my Uncle.

Morning - thank you for the coffee. It’s wet outside from a storm about a hour ago. Sky is clearing at the time.

Mornin, all! Another sunny day in the Ozarks, but cooler than yesterday, high supposed to be upper 50s.
Got some more projects worked on yesterday, and did manage a little shooting time. Have a deer camp on the other end of the property, and one of the group that hunts here was working on some construction in the area, so he and one of his co-workers were staying there at the camp, and the co- worker is a young single guy with a taste for Sig pistols. Got to shoot S P-365 and a P365XL, as well as a couple magazines each from my Shield and LCP. Nice guns. The XL had a red dot sight on it, and although I shot a pretty good group with it, it takes some getting used to. That little dot seems to dance all over the whole target! Didn't know I was that wobbly... ???. Almost liked the smaller P365 better, but it had a different trigger that tended to bite my trigger finger with each shot. He had a flat trigger installed on the XL, but the smaller one has the original curved trigger, but he was planning on changing both to the flat style. But, overall, I shot just as well with my Shield as the 2 Sigs.
-
I'm fond of my 365 ...I don't have big fingers and don't get the bite you mention
-
Other than the "bite" I mentioned, I liked the gun. There's replacement triggers that would fix that. Mage release worked easier than the shield, And inserting a mag was easier also-just inset and it locked in, while with the Shield, if the mag is fully loaded and the slide closed, needs a bit of a "smack" to lock it in. Also, with the Shield, you really need some sort of magazine loader to get the last couple of rounds in, he was loading the Sig mags by hand.
-
Wow by hand ...I need to use a Maglula on my 12 rounders saves the fingers
-
I think I need one for the 30 round AR mags- would not hurt to have one for Glocks either. I do have the one Glock provides but it can also be a issue.
PE what do you mean by finger bite?

Even though I hadn’t gotten into the Old West history until I got out to the West Cost, and found Cowboy Action Shooting, it really wasn’t until I moved to Reno, did I really find out how much history is really packed into this area.
From the Pony Express, the Immigrate Trail, the Donner-Reed party, the 49’ers, Virginia City and the Comstock lode. There are lots odd strange facts about the area also. One is that while most people think about the fact that most rain that fall East of the Appalachian Mountains flows to the Atlantic. West of there up to the Rocky's, it flowed to the Mississippi and hence into the Gulf of Mexico. The stuff that falls West of the Sierra heads to the Pacific. But there is a swath of land between the Sierra and the Rocky's that the water don’t go nowhere (sic). The water goes from Lake Tahoe down the Truckee River to Pyramid lake, then goes up into the air as evaporation. Most other rivers come out of the mountains that surround the area known as the Great Basin, only to be sucked into the sky out of areas now called Sinks. I now find that I can take a 2-3 hour drive and be going through areas that had once had 60 or so feet of water over my head. Got lots’a places around here to still explore, just need the time to keep om doin' it.

Half the potatoes are substituted for cooked beets, often people that say they hate beets want seconds. It almost totally removes that boron taste that makes some people hate beets.

I learned to like Beets by roasting them. I think beets were used in the original red velvet cake recipes as well. I planted some in a large pot on the deck.

Had some friends that would get together on Memorial Day weekend on the Colorado River (just on the California side from Yuma). Usually had 4-5 of us and we cheated a lot on true camping (had a camper trailer instead of my 10x12 white canvas tent and store bought Dinty More hash, instead of doing it from scratch). But breakfast was corned beef hash, as many eggs as would fit on top of it in my Grandmother’s cast iron skillet would hold, and coffee (with appropriate sweetener). I used to say “What you hear was NOT the crack of dawn, it was just the sound of our arteries hardening!”

Afternoon all.
Nothing exciting here to report on really. Business as unusual with the Corona junk. I'm graduating from tech school on the 1st, then back to Montana. Looks like I'll probably end up renting a car on Uncle Sam's dime to drive there. So that will be a long drive.
My plans for today include watching hickok45, drinking some coffee, and possibly a cigar.
Also, Scheels has a sale on handguns going on right now, in case anyone is curious.

The rain has moved east up the coast. This place needs a good mowing again. Too wet to start this morning.
M2 there is a dog joke about how many dogs it takes to change a light bulb. I don’t remember the entire story. Seems to me it said, only 1 boarder collie. However it would have to rewire the house first.
Your boy looks plenty smart and happy.
-
I knew I had this somewhere.
HOW MANY DOGS DOES IT TAKE TO CHANGE A LIGHT BULB????
1. Golden Retriever: The sun is shining, the day is young, we've got our whole lives ahead of us, and you're inside worrying about a stupid burned out bulb?
2. Border Collie: Just one. And then I'll replace any wiring that's not up to code.
3. Dachshund: You know I can't reach that stupid lamp!
4. Rottweiler: Make me.
5. Boxer: Who cares? I can still play with my squeaky toys in the dark.
6. Lab: Oh, me, me!!!!! Pleeeeeeeeeze let me change the light bulb! Can I? Can I? Huh? Huh? Huh? Can I? Pleeeeeeeeeze, please, please, please!
7. German Shepherd: I'll change it as soon as I've led these people from the dark, check to make sure I haven't missed any, and make just one more perimeter patrol to see that no one has tried to take advantage of the situation.
8. Jack Russell Terrier: I'll just pop it in while I'm bouncing off the walls and furniture.
9. Old English Sheep Dog: Light bulb? I'm sorry, but I don't see a light bulb!
10. Cocker Spaniel: Why change it? I can still pee on the carpet in the dark.
11. Chihuahua: Yo quiero Taco Bulb. Or 'We don't need no stinking light bulb.'
12. Greyhound: It isn't moving. Who cares?
13. Australian Shepherd: First, I'll put all the light bulbs in a little circle...
14. Poodle: I'll just blow in the Border Collie's ear and he'll do it. By the time he finishes rewiring the house, my nails will be dry.
How many cats does it take to change a light bulb?
Cats do not change light bulbs. People change light bulbs. So, the real question is:
'How long will it be before I can expect some light, some dinner, and a massage?'
ALL OF WHICH PROVES, ONCE AGAIN, THAT WHILE DOGS HAVE MASTERS, CATS HAVE STAFF!
-
Thank you Russ T... that is the one ;D
Went and picked up some Freddy’s burgers and fries cheese curds, for lunch
-
I get a kick out of the Poodle's response.

Major
Almost forgot to add my birthday wishes!
Do you have any poodles in the neighborhood? You may end up with new wiring if you blow a light bulb, and a new love life for your pup.
-
September picture, I memed it and yes that is what happened. ;)

No poodles have some Pit Bulls

I wonder if it is a daguerreotype, rather than albumen print.
Albumen print was invented 1850, yes, but most of the hard plate images, like daguerreotypes, tintypes and ambrotypes, were the ones being inset into those types of cases. Paper prints were often mounted on stiff card, such as cabinet cards, cart 'd visite, etc.
The silver tarnishing discoloration evident on the right occurred on daguerreotypes, too.
As to sharpness of image, - studio portraits, regardless of process used, tended to be in sharper focus, as the focal length, light conditions, exposure times based on those light conditions, subject being kept immobile, and darkroom developing processing were known factors any good likeness photographer had experimented with enough to know his craft.
The standing collar and cravat, and ubiquitous somber dark vest and waistcoat for a 'professional man' fit the era we've agreed as far as timeframe.
Yes, possible to be a paper albumen image stuck in a daguerreotype case, but short of carefully removing and checking the back, hard to say. Are those fly specks, or rust pinpricks? Is there a cover glass the image is behind, or the actual surface?
Regardless, it's a great image recording the dignity and status of the subject.

John I considered daguerreotype and noted the discoloration on the right , you may be right.
It is in fine condition as to it clarity if it is.
Actually I think I meant ambrotype and misspoke saying albumen....still it is in very sharp focus
-
It's an ambrotype or else he's wearing wimmins clothing, l00k at the buttons. Ambros, Darigs and tins are reversed because the picture is the negative.
-
The buttons are sewn on the left and button through on the right.
I know you're thinking the image is reversed, but I'm not convinced the rule that men's clothing buttons the opposite of women's is hard and fast.
RCJ
-
It is, easy way to tell if it's a reversed image. Mans is made to be easy to do it yourself, wimmins by someone else, maid or lover.

Sitting here this evening I told Suzanne I would pulll the trap tomorrow and look. A few minutes later she had grabbed a opened bag of chips. Ones I opened last night. She tells me to look in the bottom of the bag. I could not see anything, she took the bag from me and reached in, pulled my ring out. Weird some days it fits me somedays I can’t keep it on. you might try one of the following:
1) a thingy called a "ring guard" (courtesey Mrs Marvel) like these
https://www.walmart.com/ip/3-Pack-Ring-Guard-Sizes-Mini-Petite-Narrow/179400849
2) make your own ring guard by slitting a length of tubing

Glad you found that ring, Roo. I know exactly where mine is, on the night stand by the bed. Bent it pretty bad a few years ago, but still was wearing it up until last fall, was having problems with the left hand, swelling and such, decided it better come off, before it had to be cut off. Got it off with lots of lubricant. Was not pleasant. Knuckles seem to be bigger than they were 11 years ago.
